Think, Wonder, & Teach: Formating Parent Communications

I was talking with a friend today about how I "sugar coat" bad news to make it sound good. She was surprised to hear I actually took a class in college called Creative Communication Strategies where for 16 weeks I learned how to take the worst news possible and turn it into something nice.

In business, there are lots of times when you need to tell someone something they don't like to hear. I am blunt, straight forward, and to the point. I struggled in this class. It was the hardest class I ever took. I passed with a B... the lowest grade I ever received in college.

It never occurred to me that teacher's don't take this class although we could certainly use it! I know I use it all the time!! So today, I thought I would teach it too all of you.

It's Pea-nut But-ter Jelly Time!

(just pretend I am rapping/singing it cuz its stuck in my head that way)

WITH SPINACH!

You have seen the video haven't you??

If not, here's your chance to be annoyed.

My sons have been banned from?

singing this ever again!

There is an ice cream and cake version...

NO ONE TELL THEM!

Anyway... we were talking about PBJ and spinach not annoying songs. That is the formula for parent communications. 2 compliments... the bad thing you really want to share... and another compliment.?

Peanut Butter

Compliment #1... is just like smooth creamy peanut butter. It is simplistic in nature, easily seen by anyone who has ever meet the person. For example, Johnny comes to school every day impeccably dressed. His hair is always parted perfectly. Even his desk and backpack are always in perfect order. Or Susan walks into every classroom with a smile on her face eager to see what the day holds in store.?

Jelly

Compliment #2.... is just like sticky, sweet jelly. A little sappy, a little over the top as all parents (persons want to be complimented. For example, Johnny wit and knowledge on a wide variety of subjects enhances our daily discussions exponentially. Or Susan is just the sweetest doll and so helpful, I just don't know how I will do without her in my class.?

Spinach

The Negative.... the thing that you really wanted to say this whole time. It's like finding spinach in your sandwich. It's disgusting! You don't want to talk about, its the elephant in the room.. but it has to be said. Despite following our classroom plan, Johnny continues to exhibit difficulties with Jose. The name calling has escalated to a point where we now need your help to resolve this issue. Susan is continual interrupting the class with her humor and wit thus not allowing the other students to learn. I need your assistance in curtailing future interruptions.

Bread

Compliment #3.... Wrap up the whole thing in a nice warm piece of homemade bread fresh from the oven. I truly love having Johnny in my class and I know with this minor change his true loving nature will pour forth. Susan is so beautiful and talented. Decreasing her need for speaking will allow her to become a the brilliant brain surgery I know she is destined to become.

So there ya have it... one disgusting sandwich making lesson you will never forget. And it comes in handy too. What method do you use for sharing bad news with parents?

9 days and counting....

For Mitt Romney, there's no escaping health care

A day after the Supreme Court's landmark ruling, Romney said the high court's decision to uphold President Barack Obama's health care overhaul has created new urgency in the presidential contest. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak, File)

(AP) ? So much for Mitt Romney escaping health care.

Reminders of the Republican presidential candidate's signature achievement as Massachusetts governor ? a sweeping state health care overhaul ? now are everywhere. And Democrats and liberals ? from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to President Barack Obama to party faithful in Congress ? are making sure everyone knows that Romney's requirement that all people have health insurance was the basis of the federal mandate that the Supreme Court just upheld as a tax.

"Congress followed Massachusetts' lead," Ginsburg wrote in the landmark decision. By design or not, she ended up giving Democrats ammunition against Romney.

Romney has spent much of the presidential campaign shying away from talking about the law he signed as governor and that Obama used as a blueprint for his national health care plan. Both measures require individuals to have health insurance, mandate that businesses offer healthcare to their employees and provide subsidies or exemptions for people who can't afford it. Both laws also impose penalties on people who can afford health insurance but decide not to buy coverage.

The Supreme Court's ruling Thursday highlighted those similarities.

Mindful of them, Romney long has sought to justify his position: He defends the Massachusetts law but says he would repeal Obama's national version. The Republican also has tried to explain away comparisons between the two measures by telling audiences he would have been happy to help the president write a better law.

Obama "does me great favor by saying I was the inspiration," Romney has said. "If that was the case, why didn't you call me? Why didn't you ask me what was wrong?"

Since the court's ruling, the Republican has taken care not to mention his state law. He left it out of his statement Thursday in response to the Supreme Court ruling and didn't bring it up when he talked about health care at a private fundraiser Friday in New York.

"What happened yesterday calls for greater urgency, I believe, in the election," Romney told donors. "I think people recognize that if you want to replace Obamacare you've got to replace President Obama."

In the day since the ruling, GOP officials have criticized Obama by pointing out the Supreme Court's determination that the requirement that all individuals carry health insurance is a tax. But in using that to cast Obama as a tax-raiser, Republicans risk turning the focus on their candidate. The state law Romney signed includes a similar penalty for people who don't buy insurance.

Democrats have been hammering him on this point, citing a 2009 opinion piece in which Romney wrote that Massachusetts "established incentives for those who were uninsured to buy insurance." In the piece, he acknowledged that the requirement amounted to a tax: "Using tax penalties, as we did . encourages 'free riders' to take responsibility for themselves."

Perhaps past statements like that are why Romney has been careful not to emphasize the court's characterization of Obama's mandate as a tax. Instead, Romney notes that the federal health law includes roughly $500 billion in new tax revenue ? an argument he has been making for months.

That number, a campaign spokeswoman said, comes from Congressional Budget Office testimony from March 2011. It refers to a figure that doesn't include the $54 billion that the government expects to collect from people who pay the penalty instead of complying with the requirement to purchase health insurance over the next 10 years.

While Romney pointedly has downplayed the connection between Massachusetts and the national law, some fellow Republicans haven't been as careful.

"There's only one candidate, Gov. Romney, who has committed that he will repeal the Obamney, uh, the Obamacare tax increase," Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Friday during a conference call organized by the Republican National Committee.

In the unforced error, Jindal inadvertently invoked a phrase coined during the primary by former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who dropped out of the presidential race shortly after trying to attack Romney by dubbing the health care law "ObamneyCare."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum was more direct in linking the state and federal laws. "I think what you're seeing is it hasn't worked in Massachusetts," the former Pennsylvania senator told CNN Thursday night.

Santorum is backing Romney now, but during the primary, he cited health care as the reason why Romney is "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, another rival, called it "a forerunner of Obamacare."

Back then, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who largely steered clear of attacking Romney during the GOP debates, also wrote to Iowa supporters that Romney "fought for state-run health care while governor, but now laughingly wants you to believe he will fight to repeal Obamacare."

During the primary, Romney struggled to distance himself from the law partly because he risked stoking longtime criticism that he is willing to change his core beliefs for political gain.

"I'm not going to change my positions by virtue of being in a presidential campaign," Romney told Fox News in the days leading up to the Iowa caucuses. "What we did was right for the people of Massachusetts."

Rahall to join GOP in contempt vote

UPDATED:

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 255-67 to hold U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

---

Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., will join House Republicans in voting to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt.

Holder has refused to hand over documents related to Fast and Furious, a Department of Justice gun-running operation. Amid calls for Holder to step down, members of the U.S. House of Representatives are expected to vote today whether to hold the attorney general in contempt.

Rahall said members of the administration should be expected to uphold the Constitution and ensure government answers to the people.

"The?Congress has a Constitutional responsibility to ensure that our government ? whether controlled by a Republican or Democratic administration ? answers to the people," Rahall said in a statement.?"This matter should never have come to the point that the Congress would be considering the question of contempt on the part of a member of the Executive Branch. ?But, as with most messes, the sooner we clean it up, the better.? This has gone on way too long over two administrations.? We need to move on."

Fast and Furious was a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms mission conducted between 2009 and 2011. It was intended to stem the flow of firearms between the U.S. and Mexico by intercepting "straw purchasers" and gun traffickers in the United States.

On Dec. 14, 2010, U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was killed while on patrol 11 miles from the Mexican border. The AK-pattern rifles found after the killing were traced to Fast and Furious, though the bullet that killed Terry was traced to another weapon that was not linked to the operation.

Congress began an investigation into "gunwalking" operations such as Fast and Furious in January 2011. On May 3, ?2011, Holder testified to the House Judiciary Committee that he did not know who signed off on Fast and Furious, but that it was being investigated.

Holder appeared in his seventh Congressional period June 7 and continued to deny knowledge of Fast and Furious. By that time, the Justice Department had turned over more than 7,000 pages of documents. But the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted June 20 to recommend that Holder be held in contempt. At issue were 1,300 pages of documents that the Department of Justice had not been turned over to the committee.

The contempt vote is expected today.

It's business vs. wilderness in oyster farm's fight to extend federal lease

?

Not even a small business providing a product or service can be ignored by the radical environmental Left.? It must be stopped.? People should not be allowed to work or earn a profit.

?The federal lease for his operation, which allows Lunny to harvest oysters within the pristine Point Reyes National Seashore, expires Nov. 30. With the backing of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. ? a powerful ally and ardent supporter of his oyster farm ? Lunny is seeking a 10-year extension that would mean survival for Drakes Bay.

The resulting conflict ? between supporters of a thriving, sustainable oyster farm and wilderness advocates trying to protect one of the world?s most spectacular conservation areas ? has divided the Point Reyes community.?

This could cost 30 jobs.? Not much when you have millions unemployed, still these are human being?they deserve respect and a job.? Obama, at the cost of $1.63 million could get these people jobs in the solar industry?your money in action.? Or let them farm oysters and stay off the public welfare system.? Bet you did not know about this.

It?s business vs. wilderness in oyster farm?s fight to extend federal lease

The state?s last remaining oyster cannery has attracted powerful allies ? and scrutiny from environmentalists
By: Jeff Greenwald, Center for Investigative Reporting,? 6/27/12

Oyster farm in limbo

On clear days at low tide from his home above Drakes Estero, Kevin Lunny can make out the wooden racks of the Drakes Bay Oyster Co. farm. Lunny, who is also a cattle rancher and contractor, bought the business in 2005 ? despite some daunting conditions.

The original tenants ? Johnson?s Oyster Farm ? had left a legacy of public health violations and plastic debris polluting the bay and shoreline. Along with this vexing environmental cleanup, Lunny inherited another mess.

The federal lease for his operation, which allows Lunny to harvest oysters within the pristine Point Reyes National Seashore, expires Nov. 30. With the backing of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. ? a powerful ally and ardent supporter of his oyster farm ? Lunny is seeking a 10-year extension that would mean survival for Drakes Bay.

The resulting conflict ? between supporters of a thriving, sustainable oyster farm and wilderness advocates trying to protect one of the world?s most spectacular conservation areas ? has divided the Point Reyes community.

The debate has become one of the most bitter local battles since the Point Reyes National Seashore was cobbled together out of government holdings and private ranches 50 years ago.

?Kevin Lunny is the most sensitive ecological farmer in our region,? said Sue Conley, whose Cowgirl Creamery produces artisanal cheeses sold all over the United States. ?He?s a model for the kind of agriculture that environmentalists should embrace. But this is a stronghold of old-time thinking about environmentalism being separate from human activity.?

To environmentalists, the status of Drakes Estero is a matter of science, law and federal policy. Much of the Point Reyes National Seashore already is protected by the Wilderness Act of 1964, which defines a federally protected wilderness as ?retaining its primeval character and influence, without permanent improvements or human habitation.?

Lunny?s farm grows 500,000 pounds of non-native Pacific oysters each year and harvests them using motorboats. Some 30 people work on the site. It?s a rustic-looking operation, surrounded by a shucking room, packing room and large round tanks used to grow oyster larvae.

Visitors are guided past mountains of discarded shells, used to restore habitat and aid in new oyster growth. Using only organic feed ? naturally occurring phytoplankton ? the business is California?s last oyster cannery. About half of the Drakes Bay crop is packed in jars and sold in the retail market; the rest supplies fresh oysters to scores of restaurants statewide. The business brings in just a little less than $2 million a year.

The roots of Lunny?s dilemma go back four decades. In 1972, the National Park Service ? which owns Drakes Estero as part of the Point Reyes National Seashore ?granted the Johnsons a 40-year terminable lease called a ?reservation of use.?

Four years later, with the Point Reyes Wilderness Act [PDF], Congress designated the 2,200-acre inlet a ?potential wilderness.? This means that in November, when the oyster farm?s lease expires, the park service would take over the land. Drakes Estero then would become the only federally protected marine wilderness on America?s Pacific coast.

?Once Congress says you are potential wilderness, you?re on a one-way path,? said Amy Trainer, executive director of the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin. ?The Lunnys knew the deal when they moved in seven years ago. I?m not working to shut down the oyster farm. I?m working to honor a congressional wilderness designation.?

Initially, those conditions were acceptable to the Lunnys. In 2006, however, they began working with Feinstein to protect their growing business. In 2009, she attached a rider to an appropriations bill, giving Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar the discretion to extend the Lunnys? lease an additional 10 years. His decision is due by Nov. 30.

The rider has raised the political stakes of the decision and puts substantial pressure on Salazar and the Obama administration. Salazar must decide between a new national wilderness and, in a time of economic uncertainty, a small business that a powerful California senator has fought to defend through legislation, press releases and public statements.

Only three months after President Barack Obama was inaugurated, Feinstein wrote Salazar saying she was ?concerned about the National Park Service?s apparent efforts to shut down a family-owned oyster operation in Drakes Estero by casting it as harmful to the environment. Drakes Estero has been home to a family-owned oystering business since 1934 ? long before the park was established. It employs 30-40 people, and is part of the sustainable agricultural movement in West Marin.?

Few deny that Lunny?s operation has an effect on the character and ecology of Drakes Estero. It now falls on the National Park Service to assess, with a consultant specializing in preparing environmental documents, whether the Drakes Bay oyster farm is harming the estuary?s marine, bird and plant life.

There?s no question that the oyster farm itself is not compatible with wilderness. The Wilderness Act of 1964 defines the term as ?an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.?

The farm?s footprint is subtle, but it?s not invisible. Noise from the oyster-collecting boats, which make more than 1,000 trips a year, may disturb pupping seals. Some patches of native eelgrass have been covered.

And there is an ongoing problem with ?legacy? debris: 6-inch black plastic spacer tubes, used in the cultivation of oysters, that wash up on Point Reyes? beaches. Clumsy farming methods by the Johnsons let thousands of these tubes escape. Although Lunny is phasing these out in favor of more eco-friendly methods, his oyster farm also uses the spacers when necessary.

?We?re not pretending that there?s no effect,? said Lunny, whose operation attracts some 50,000 visitors a year and produces about 40 percent of the oysters consumed in California. ?Going out on a boat, there will be times when we may flush birds or whatever. There?s no such thing as zero impact.?

So far, the peer-reviewed science examining Drakes Estero has produced little direct evidence that the oyster operation is creating a significant impact on the seal population, eelgrass or tidal waters. A 2009 report from the National Research Council stated the dilemma plainly: ?The adverse or beneficial effects of oyster farming cannot be fully understood given the existing data and analyses.?

The result of this uncertainty is that scientific findings made by one side are swiftly challenged by the other. This has led to dueling environmental impact reports and seemingly endless peer reviews, costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

Activists assert that the estuary?s designation as a potential wilderness, coupled with the oyster farm?s soon-to-expire lease, indelibly shows what Congress intended when it passed the Point Reyes Wilderness Act.

?National Park wilderness is our nation?s most sacred public trust resource,? Trainer said. ?And here it is under attack. It took a big fight to get this wilderness designation for Drakes Estero. Think of all the times we?ve battled to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; this is the same concept. ?

But Lunny ? who can see the fingerling outlines of Drakes Estero from the front door of his Historic G Ranch, just off Sir Francis Drake Boulevard ? believes the very notion of calling the area a wilderness is a stretch. Oyster farms, he said, have been a part of the estuary since 1936.

?Drakes Estero is a hand-shaped estuary completely surrounded by ranches,? he said. ?What this will do is cherry-stem a small wilderness into the middle of farmland.?

Another more recent point of contention centers on what actually was meant when Drakes Estero was designated a ?potential wilderness.? Did Congress want the oyster farm to stay or require it to leave? Nearly four decades later, one of the Point Reyes Wilderness Act?s supporters ? former congressman and longtime environmentalist Pete McCloskey ? claims Congress never intended to remove the oyster operation.

?The oyster farm is a valuable resource for education and research as well as food production,? McCloskey wrote in a July 2011 letter to the Point Reyes Light newspaper.

The statement was frustrating for wilderness advocates, who respect McCloskey but hold him to the law he helped pass in 1976.

?If he wants to change his mind on how he wants to interpret this policy, that?s fine,? said Neal Desai, associate director of the National Parks Conservation Association?s Pacific regional office. ?But the law has been clear and in writing for years.?

Trainer agrees. In September, she said, the National Park Service called for comments on its draft environmental impact statement. There were more than 50,000 responses from all over the country. Of these, an estimated 92 percent called for the ?no-action alternative,? which would allow the oyster farm lease to expire.

?The public support for wilderness,? she said, ?is overwhelming.?

The next step is a final environmental impact statement, which is designed to summarize whether the commercial operation is consistent with existing policy, law and science. Salazar will review these findings, along with arguments to the contrary, and decide whether to make the business a part of the estuary?s landscape for at least another decade.

Salazar?s ruling, when it comes, will resonate far beyond the wooden oyster beds of Drakes Bay. Environmentalists contend that if the oyster farm?s lease is extended, park protections everywhere could be affected.

Desai said there are hundreds of similar ?reservation of use? leases throughout the national park system. The environmental importance of Drakes Estero cannot be replicated, he said, while oysters can be grown on other farms, some as close by as Tomales Bay, less than an hour?s drive away.

?Secretary Salazar?s decision will have a major impact, for better or worse,? Desai said. ?He can affirm that our country?s national parks are managed for public benefit, rather than private gain.?

While many well-known environmentalists have expressed strong support for the Drakes Estero wilderness ? including biologist E.O. Wilson and oceanographer Sylvia Earle ? the issue is likely to be decided on strictly legal and scientific grounds.

The final word is due this fall. Until then, no one can predict what Kevin Lunny will see from his porch when December rolls around.

TV reporter loses her smile after Bell's Palsy attack

It was a terrifying moment for Mary King. On June 1, sitting on the runway in Charlotte, N.C., on a plane bound for Baltimore where she planned to celebrate her upcoming wedding with friends, the 25-year-old television reporter realized she couldn't rub her lips together. Then, she couldn't move the right side of her face or blink her right eye.

She paged the flight attendant for help, and a doctor on board the plane said King had better get to a hospital. The pilot took the plane back to the airport, and King's father rushed her to the nearest emergency room.

King feared she was having a stroke, but the doctor had an even more unexpected diagnosis: she had Bell's palsy.

When King finally looked at her face in the mirror at the hospital, she said she felt a wave of despair: The right side of it was frozen, her eye was unblinking and the side of her mouth drooped, even when she tried to smile.

"All of a sudden it hits you how different you look," she said. "I kept thinking, What if I still look like this on my wedding day?"

People with Bell's palsy aren't typically stricken for life, but recovery can take weeks to months. The condition, a temporary facial paralysis, strikes when the seventh cranial nerve, the tiny nerve controlling the face, gets inflamed or damaged, perhaps from some kind of trauma or viruses such as Epstein Barr or the Varciella Zoster, the virus that causes chicken pox and shingles.

"It's probably not the virus itself causing the symptoms, but the body's reaction to the virus, the inflammation that comes from fighting it off," said Dr. Wendy Wright, medical director of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and Emory Hospital Midtown. "But the exact cause of Bell's palsy isn't exactly known."

There are few symptoms that are red flags of a Bell's palsy attack. But looking back on the 12 hours before her diagnosis, King could see there were signs she had dismissed. When she awoke early that morning for her shift on the morning news for WIS TV, the NBC affiliate in Columbia, S.C., she had a sharp, shooting pain in the back of her head. Later, when she opened a carton of blueberry yogurt for breakfast, it was tasteless, like eating paste.

"Looking back with 20/20 hindsight, I could see, OK, that was the onset of the symptoms," King said. "But at the time, you just keep going."

Once the facial paralysis sets in, many people may mistake it as a symptom of a stroke, just as King did. Wright said neurologists are also thinking about the possibility of a stroke when a patient reports facial paralysis. But there are a few subtle differences. A stroke will usually cause a few additional symptoms, such as numbness or weakness in the arms and legs. And unlike Bell's palsy, a stroke will usually let patients control the upper part of their faces.

"I will ask patients to raise their eyebrows as if they are surprised," Wright said. "A person with a stroke will usually have some wrinkling of their forehead."

A week after her attack, King's symptoms still hadn't dissipated much. She still couldn't close her right eye, and had to sleep wearing an eye-patch to keep it closed so her cornea wouldn't dry out. Doctors gave her steroids and anti-inflammatory medications.

Embarrassed that she couldn't smile and interact normally with people, depression set in, as it does for many patients with Bell's palsy. King's job as a local television reporter made the stress of her paralyzed face even worse. She had to stop reporting on the air while she tried to recover.

"I love my job. I'm one of those people who loves getting up and going to work in the morning," King said. "The first thought that went through my mind was what if this doesn't go away and I can't do my job anymore?"

The hardest moment came when King went to try on wedding gowns with her mother. Standing in front of the mirror, all she could manage was a lopsided smile.

"I just didn't want to look in the mirror," she said. "All I wanted to do was smile because I was so happy, but when I did it just looked so awkward."

When she explained her condition and the fact that she couldn't smile to the women running the shop, someone replied, "You are smiling. You're smiling with your eyes."

Gradually, King started to improve. It was 15 days before she could smile again. Now, more than three weeks after those first terrifying moments on the plane, King said she is about 97 percent recovered. But she still notices little things.

"I used to be able to wink with both eyes, now I can't wink with the right eye," she said. "But I'm by no means complaining. To have my recovery time be what it was is a blessing."

Although most people recover from Bell's palsy, having one attack makes it more likely that another one will strike. And some people never recover.

King reported her experience for WIS TV, and said she was inspired by the outpouring of support from people in Columbia, many of whom had Bell's palsy themselves, or saw the condition strike friends and family. She said the most important thing that kept her going through her recovery was the community's support and a determined faith that she would get better.

"Really, the prayers and keeping the hope and believing in your heart that this will get better was the key," King said. "Perspective is everything."

Cornerback Alphonso Smith doesn?t care whether the Lions are trying to trade him, and he won?t care until they do.

Smith, picked by the Broncos in the second round of the 2009 draft after Denver shipped a 2010 first-rounder to Seattle, was sent to Detroit after only one season for tight end Dan Gronkowski.? Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that the Lions could move Smith in an effort to beef up their secondary.

?Please forgive my frankness,? Smith told Dave Dye of FOXSportsDetroit.com.? ?To be blunt with you, I really didn?t care.? It didn?t happen.? It still may happen.? You never know.

?I don?t care about reports or rumors.? Only thing I can focus on is I?m a Detroit Lion and I?m a Detroit Lion until I?m not.?

His preference would be to continue to wear Honolulu blue.

?I want to be here,? Smith said.? ?I?ve grown a lot with the scheme and the players and the things that the coaches want.? But that decision is way above my pay grade.? My job is to come in and play, not deal in personnel or whether I?m getting traded or not. . . .? Really don?t care.?

Smith does care that he?s in a contract year.? With his first-ever shot at free agency coming in March, he has every reason to play well, regardless of where he ends up playing.

If he stays in Detroit, he may have a chance to play plenty.? He could end up filling the vacancy in the starting lineup created by the departure of Eric Wright via free agency.

?One of the ways I try to separate myself is making plays,? Smith said.? ?As I look around, if you talk about playmakers in the secondary, I?ll probably be the first on that list.? That?s how I separate myself. . . .? Do my job.? Don?t give up any big ones and make plays when it?s there.?

Regardless of whether Smith gets traded, the Lions need someone to not ?give up any big ones? and ?make plays when it?s there? in 2012.? If not, the Lions won?t get any farther than they did in 2011.

Ousted Paraguay leader accuses lawmakers of 'coup'

Paraguay's ousted leader Fernando Lugo on Sunday accused lawmakers of carrying out a "parliamentary coup d'etat" to force him from power, as international protests mounted over his abrupt removal.

In his first public appearance since his impeachment on Friday over a deadly land dispute earlier this month, Lugo again blasted Congress for its snap decision but said he would nevertheless accept it in the name of peace.

"Lugo has not been dismissed; democracy has been dismissed. They have not respected the popular will," the ousted leader said in an unexpected appearance at a street protest attended by about 500 people in the capital Asuncion.

He called his impeachment "unjust" and called for "peaceful" demonstrations in the impoverished, landlocked South American nation.

"There was a parliamentary coup d'etat... the arguments for impeachment had no value," the 61-year-old former leader said after entering the studio of TV Publica, scene of the protest, for a brief news conference.

In a 39-4 vote, lawmakers on Friday found Lugo guilty of performing his duties badly during the armed clash on June 15 that claimed the lives of six police and 11 squatters on a privately-held farm.

His vice president Federico Franco was quickly sworn in to cheers in the Congress as Paraguay's new leader.

Lugo acknowledged that it would be "very difficult" to return in power, but said there should be no more violence, adding: "Peacefully, the democratic process will continue, with more strength."

Franco on Saturday told AFP in an interview in his office that he hoped Lugo would help him stem the international outcry over the change in power.

"Right now I'm trying to speak with president Lugo. I'm going to do it. I think his presence as a Paraguayan is very important to give an international image, because right now we need a legally constituted government," he said.

Franco said he planned to ask Lugo "to help us prevent Paraguay from receiving an absolutely unjust, unnecessary and unpopular punishment."

No foreign government has recognized Paraguay's new leadership.

Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay -- Paraguay's partners in the Mercosur trading bloc -- recalled their ambassadors for consultations.

The secretary general of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, called the snap impeachment a "disrespect to due process."

Insulza said the Americas had once again witnessed "a summary judgment that, while formally in keeping with the law, did not appear to fulfill all the legal precepts of the right to a legitimate defense."

Franco, who served as Lugo's vice president, earlier defended the ouster of his predecessor as being in compliance with the country's constitution, and he insisted "there was no coup."

"There are no soldiers in the street," he added.

But he acknowledged he was concerned about the international reaction.

"We will make our best efforts to get in touch with neighboring countries to try to demonstrate our clear commitment to democracy," he said.

Franco met earlier with the Vatican's envoy Agustin Arietti, and with the German ambassador Dirk Niebel, who said Berlin viewed the ouster as "a normal change of government, not by means of elections, but a normal process."

Lugo's lawyers had just two hours to present their case on his behalf in the Senate impeachment trial.

The torrent of furious responses to the ouster came not just from traditional leftist allies like Bolivia, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Argentina's President Cristina Kirchner took to her Twitter account to repeat that "Argentina will not validate the coup in Paraguay."

"It's a travesty of justice and an affront to the rule of law to remove a president in 24 hours, with no guarantees to defend himself," the executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Santiago Canton, told a press conference.

The first major international event the new government had been expected to attend is a Mercosur summit in Argentina on Thursday and Friday.

But Franco told AFP he would not go if his presence would make matters worse.

Peru said it had offered to host a presidential summit of Mercosur leaders next week to assess the situation in Paraguay.

Brazil said members of Mercosur and Unasur, another regional bloc, were considering what measures should be applied to Paraguay in light of the developments.

Franco noted that any blockade of Paraguay would hurt Brazilian entrepreneurs, who have major interests in the country. Sixty percent of Paraguay's trade is with Brazil.

Extremely popular at the time of his election in 2008, Lugo -- a former priest -- saw his reputation in this predominantly Catholic country take a nosedive by repeated claims he fathered children while under a vow of chastity.

Sony working on AR specs to rival Google's Project Glass

Sony is planning a rival to Google's Project Glass AR specs, which would allow pairs of users to share information by looking into each other's eyes.

A recently-filed patent showcases tech that acts like the various 'bump' apps that allow folks to share contact details by placing their phones together.

In this reality, instead of asking for a girl's phone number, you'd go up and stare into her AR bespectacled eyes until she hands over the digits. That's if the police don't show up first.

Light Emitter

Sony's Optical Communication Display Glasses, as they're coined, also possess "A Light Emitter that could communicate with other optical communication display(s), like a specialised wrist watch."

The glasses could also communicate with a mobile phone, PDA or games machine, meaning they could be used for work or play.

Aside from that feature, Sony's offering looks to be much like Google's.

Naturally there's a camera on board, which would pick up QR codes and the like. There's also, like Google's Project Glass, a microphone and speakers built into the headset.

We expect to hear more about Project Glass at Google's I/O conference next week, following several recent public appearances.

Last weekend we reported on a purported Xbox 720 leak which proposed connected Kinect Glasses, so it seems the digital specs revolution is shaping up to be one of the biggest tech stories of 2013.
