Boost your productivity with the cloud | myBusiness techblog ...

The recent Budget 2012 is clear that productivity-driven, rather than labour-driven, growth will pave the way for Singapore?s future. The government has adopted a carrot- and-stick approach by tightening the foreign worker quota and incentivising innovation and productivity through enhancement of the Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) scheme. Tightening of foreign labour will raise costs and require businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) ? including small and medium-sized accounting firms ? to relook their processes and consider ways of raising productivity to be profitable. The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) is keen to explore ways of taking advantage of technology as part of its effort to enhance its members? productivity and increase the competitiveness of their businesses.

To do more with less, it is timely for SMEs in Singapore ? numbering some 154,000 ? to consider adopting cloud computing among various technologies. Put simply, cloud computing is the concept of creating access to office software, business applications and data online, managed by a third-party service provider.

Anyone who has shared information using Google Docs, Dropbox or hosted photos on Flickr would have come into contact with cloud computing. Cloud solutions can be accessed on any computer or mobile platform, anywhere in the world, as long as there is an Internet connection. With Singapore?s world-class telecommunications infrastructure, gaining access to new business and technology capabilities via the Web has become easier and cheaper.

The case for adopting cloud solutions is gaining momentum. According to a survey, SMEs in the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) will invest US$16.5 billion in cloud computing solutions. Asean markets, with an annual growth potential of over 20 per cent in cloud investments, are expected to be the next fastest growing sub-region after China . Globally, 39 per cent of SMEs are expected to be paying for one or more cloud services within three years, up from 29 per cent now. This increase in the adoption rate reflects the numerous advantages of cloud computing.

Dumas Chin, SingTel?s vice-president of business sales, highlighted: ?With the advent of cloud computing, SMEs are finally able to access much needed info-communications technology resources, which were previously available to much larger companies, at a fraction of the cost. Therefore, SMEs are able to improve their productivity, increase business agility and reduce their operating costs substantially.?

A big plus

Businesses have often wrestled with the challenge of high capital investments in hardware and software. With cloud computing, users need not buy or install any hardware to use the solutions. Instead, the infrastructure and software can be accessed on demand through Web portals, for which users pay a modest monthly subscription.

As an illustration, an SME with four employees need just pay a monthly subscription fee of only $29.90 for four SingTel QuickBooks Online user licences, with free local support and product upgrades. In contrast, a similar SME would have to fork out about $2,799 to acquire and install its own off-the-shelf financial and accounting package. This efficient and asset-light approach frees up cash flow for businesses, thus allowing them to channel their capital to more productive use. Thus, SMEs no longer need to invest in new hardware, software or employ any IT staff to get started on cloud solutions.

It is a big plus for employees to access their data and applications on secure online platforms from any mobile devices. This allows them (especially sales and marketing staff) to close deals, respond to customers and obtain market information more quickly. This mobility feature helps them stay ahead of the competition in today?s fast-paced environment. Further, SMEs do not have to worry about nor pay for continuous software upgrades, patch releases and software licence management. Unlike buying a fixed number of user licences for a conventional software package, cloud solutions allow SMEs to scale their usage according to business requirements, and its use is intuitive.

Currently, there are many technology service providers who offer a wide range of business cloud solutions. For example, QuickBooks Online solution is secure, Web-based, convenient and easy to use. This business accounting software for SMEs helps them organise their finances, send invoices to customers and generate profit- and-loss statements and balance sheets, among various things. SMEs can even update their customer information or check their business health on their mobile devices. The solution?s well-thought-out features make it intuitive to use. Unlike off-the-shelf solutions, users do not need to customise computations to generate the figures. As the solution is compliant with local accounting standards, users need only key in the relevant figures to generate key business reports and file the Goods and Services Tax returns.

?By exploiting the full potential of cloud computing, an SME will get more bang for its buck and effect a formidable ?force multiplier? to face the competition in today?s challenging economic climate. If properly harnessed, cloud computing will enable SMEs to achieve the twin aims of raising their productivity and lowering business costs,? added Mr Chin.

Evan Law, acting CEO at ICPAS, highlighted: ?Similarly, small and medium-sized accounting firms may employ such hassle-free cloud solutions as their strategy to increase accessibility of work-related information offsite. This may help increase the work-life balance of their staff and enhance staff retention. It is important for these firms to stay ahead with new technologies to benefit their own practices and as a form of advisory service to clients.?

By capitalising on cloud computing, SMEs can generate new revenue streams as well as boost client satisfaction and loyalty with such value-adding services.

Recognising that SMEs stand to gain from technology solutions, the government has introduced financial incentives to encourage its take-up rate. There are at least two possible schemes, such as the Increase SME Productivity with Infocomm Adoption and Transformation (iSPRINT) and the Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) scheme.

For SMEs that are currently manual in all their operations and intending to implement information and communication technology (ICT) solutions for the first time, iSPRINT?supports up to 70 per cent of qualifying costs. Under PIC, companies are encouraged to raise productivity and innovation through the adoption of technology.

For instance, expenditure incurred on procuring cloud computing services will qualify for enhanced deduction under the heading of PIC automation equipment. This means that SMEs which adopt cloud computing will qualify for tax deduction at 400 per cent or up to $400,000 of qualifying expenditure incurred per year. With the enhancement of the PIC?in Budget 2012, companies can enjoy 60 per cent cash payout for up to $100,000 of the firm?s PIC expenditure on a quarterly basis.

Truly, this makes the productive and innovative deployment of technology even more appealing.

CASE STUDY: iGROW Pte Ltd

Mr Benedict Lim and his employees at iGROW Pte Ltd struggled for years with keeping their financial records up-to-date with an off-the-shelf financial and accounting software. Due to the high start-up cost and hassles of acquiring additional licences, the holistic wellness consultancy could only afford to install the financial software on one computer. This resulted in a bottleneck, which led to slower decision-making process, delayed invoicing of customers and needless overtime.

?We were at our wits end trying to source for another financial package which offered simplicity, security, customisation with the option of adding on future applications and most importantly, affordability. The replacement software also had to be accessible outside of the office as it would align our staff with our corporate culture of flexibility and work-life balance,? Mr Lim said.

He found the solution in a cloud-based financial and accounting solution. Having successfully transitioned his company onto the cloud computing platform, a relieved Mr Lim said, ?The new cloud computing financial and accounting package has revolutionised the way our company works. My staff and I adore its online access which means that we can login to the apps anytime from our homes and mobile devices.? What?s more, I can access important information within clicks, to manage my business effectively and make objective and swift decisions.

?A job which required hours to complete in the past can now be done in a matter of minutes. Looking at the number of man-hours saved from using the new cloud-based financial and accounting package, I reckon that iGROW has increased our productivity by at least 30%,? he chuckled.

Subliminal Messages VS Positive Affirmations

?

Never heard about Subliminal Messages? I guess you had. They seems to be the new tool for Self Improvement capable to do almost everything but what are they? A special version or use of Positive Affirmations. I hope I haven?t ruined the surprise.

?

If you?re a reader of this blog you already know what are Positive Affirmations but just in case: they are carefully crafted simple sentences which help to focus the mind on a desired outcome we want to have. Constant repetition two or three times a day until they provide the desired result. Clearly the power is not in the Positive Affirmations, it?s our mind that being often and repeatedly focused on what we want to achieve does what?s needed to reach our goal. Usually they are either said aloud or mentally in the case we?re not alone.

?

Subliminal Messages are Positive Affirmations usually recorded in an mp3 file below the normal hearing ability of the human being. The principle is that being below the hearing level the sentence is caught by the Subconscious Mind even if skipping the control of the Conscious so results are guaranteed because the Conscious Mind cannot interfere.

?

This theory is valid because as demonstrated by blind people our ears can hear a wider range of sounds than we think so it makes sense that even if we can?t consciously hear something the Subconscious part of our Mind can pick it. But I don?t think that putting away the Conscious Mind is a wise decision in the long time. Subliminal Messages work but it?s better to use them in conjunction with Positive Affirmations.

?

Positive Affirmations to work require our Conscious Mind to accept them, then they get engraved into the Subconscious Mind and that?s why they work. Then we can add Subliminal Messages to reinforce our desire on the Subconscious thus getting faster results. It?s my opinion and I can be wrong but this is it.

?

One difference is that while to work Positive Affirmations require at least to be relaxed as it?s difficult to focus on something if you?re tensed, Subliminal Messages do not require relaxation so they can be listened to almost anytime during the day (except when driving). In the case of subliminals embedded in a silent mp3, that is without music, they can even played during the night at sleep. At least if they don?t keep you awake, this is a matter of personal attitude, someone gets awaken while someone else can listen to Subliminal Messages all night without problems.

?

So, there is really no secret regarding Subliminal Messages, they are just Positive Affirmations recorded below the normal hearing range of the human being embedded either in music or in a silent tape. Or Videos.

?

Subliminal Advertising: this is a very particular way of using Subliminal Messages, so successful that they have been banned years ago and are no more used, probably and hopefully. And actually this is the demonstration that they work otherwise they wouldn?t be banned in commercials, right?

?

Subliminal Advertising can be done in two ways: either by flashing short sentences on a screen for a tenth of a second or less or by subliminal audio. Sometimes both. They do work even without the cooperation of the Conscious Mind but just for the time to influence your behavior shopping and they require to be used many times before being effective. Nevertheless Subliminal Advertising worked.

?

The problem with Subliminal Messages is that you could be under their influence without knowing it. How can you know that you?re being bombarded by them? You can?t unless you analyze what you see and hear with specific software. Or you can try to protect yourself from these kinds of influences using an Hypnosis script. If someone is interested let me know and I?ll write a post about it.

?

Let?s not forget though that subliminal videos can be very useful for people hearing impaired, just like Self Hypnosis and Positive Affirmations. 90 percent of the times we can always find a way to turn around obstacles.

?

Now, do you think you know enough about Subliminal Messages and Positive Affirmations or do you want to know something more? Have I been clear enough? Speak your Mind.

?

And if you?re interested in audio Subliminal Messages this is a serious website where you can get a free mp3 so you can check before you buy.

Search continues for ultrarunner Micah True in NM

(AP) ? More search teams fanned out in the rugged wilderness of New Mexico's Gila National Forest Saturday as the search expanded for renowned long-distance runner Micah True, who has not been seen since heading out for a run four days earlier.

Authorities say 60-year-old True, of Boulder, Colo., left for a run Tuesday morning from a lodge and didn't return. A search began on Wednesday.

True is an accomplished extreme-distance ultrarunner ? taking on distances of 50 miles or more ? who was featured in the bestselling book "Born to Run."

There's added concern because temperatures have dipped into the mid-20s on some recent nights and true was last seen wearing only shorts and a T-shirt and carrying a water bottle.

The 14 search teams that were scouring the area on Friday were supplemented with additional volunteer teams from across the state Saturday morning, said New Mexico state police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald. Teams were on horseback, using dogs and a helicopter and search plane were being used.

Still, as the days pass, the chances of a successful rescue diminish.

"We're going to do everything possible to cover as much ground as possible, but it's already been four days," McDonald said. "By no means are we going to give up, but time is of the essence as always in a search and rescue effort."

True is the race director of The Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon, a 50-plus mile extreme race that took place in Urique, Mexico on March 4 and has been featured in the magazines "Running Times" and "Outside," according to the Silver City Daily Press. He was the central character ? known as "Caballo Blanco" ? in "Born to Run," a non-fiction book by Christopher McDougall.

He was staying at The Wilderness Lodge and Hot Springs near the Gila Cliff Dwellings in southwestern New Mexico.

When True hadn't returned by Wednesday morning, Jane and Dean Brummer, co-owners of the lodge, contacted State Police and the search launched. Dean Brummer helped in the search.

"He left his car and dog here and he ran up the road to where the trailheads are," Dean Brummer told the paper. "So they don't know which trail he would have taken. He didn't tell anybody where he was going and it's a pretty big wilderness out there. We've looked in all the obvious places, and a lot of the not-so obvious."

Galaxy Planet Population

NASA's Kepler Telescope, a planet hunting instrument specifically designed to search out planets orbiting distant stars, has begun to provide some initial results that would indicate that planets are quite common in our galaxy. However, does that mean that any of them are actually habitable? Or better yet, that life actually exists on the surface?

Vast Number of Planet Candidates Discovered

While data analysis is still underway, the initial results from the Kepler mission revealed 1,235 planet candidates, while 54 of them were orbiting their host star in the so-called "habitable zone".

But before we get too excited we must first realized that these detections are indications of planet candidates. Very few of them have actually been confirmed yet as planets. The coming years will reveal their true identity.

Let's now, however, operate under the assumption that these objects are indeed planets. The numbers reported above are encouraging, but on the surface they don't seem that impressive considering the vast number of stars in our Galaxy.

That is because Kepler did not survey the entire galaxy, bur rather only one four-hundreth of the sky. And even then, this initial data set is likely to only find a small fraction of the planets that are out there.

As additional data is accumulated and analyzed, the number of candidates could jump ten fold. Extrapolating out to the rest of the galaxy, scientists estimate that the Milky Way could contain upwards of 50 billion planet, 500 million of which could be in the habitable zone.

And of course this is only for our own galaxy, there are billions upon billions more galaxies in the Universe. Unfortunately, they are so far away, it is unlikely that we will ever know if life exists within them.

However, these numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt. Since not all stars are created equal. Most of the stars in our galaxy exist in regions that may be inhospitable to life.

Finding Planets in the "Galactic Habitable Zone"

Normally when we use the words "habitable zone" we are referring to a region of space around a star where a planet would be able to sustain liquid water. Meaning the planet is neither too hot, or too gold. But also, that it contains the needed blend of fundamental elements and compounds to provide the necessary building blocks for life.

As it so happens, finding a star that is fit to host a solar system and have said system support life may prove quite the trick. You see, beyond all the previously stated requirements about warmth and such, the planet must first contain an appreciable amount of heavy elements in order to construct a world fit for life.

But this must also be balanced against the fact that you don't want excessive amounts of very high energy radiation (i.e. X-rays and gamma-rays) as they would seriously hinder development of even basic life. Oh, and you probably don't want to be in a really high density region, because there would be lots of stuff to bump into and stars exploding and, well, just lots of stuff that you don't want.

You may be wondering, so what? What does this have to do with anything? Well, in order to satisfy the heavy element condition, you have to be reasonably close to the galactic center (i.e. not near the edge of the galaxy). Fair enough, there is still quite a lot of galaxy to choose from. But in order to avoid high energy radiation from nearly continuous supernovae you want to steer clear of the inner third of the galaxy.

Now things are tightening up a bit. Now we get to the spiral arms. Don't go near those, way too much going on. So that leaves the regions between the spiral arms that are more than a third of the way out, but not too close to the edge.

While controversial, some estimates put this "Galactic Habitable Zone" at less than 10% of the galaxy. What's more is that, by its own determination, this region is decidedly star poor; most of the galaxies stars in the plane are in the bulge (inner third of the galaxy) and in the arms. So we may only be left with 1% of the galaxy's stars. Maybe less, much less.

So How Likely Is Life in Our Galaxy?

This, of course, brings us back to Drake's Equation -- a somewhat ridiculous, yet fun tool for estimating the number of alien civilizations in our galaxy. The very first number on which the equation is based is simply the star formation rate of our galaxy. But it pays no mind to where these stars are forming; an important element considering most of the new stars born reside outside the habitable zone.

Suddenly the wealth of stars, and therefore potential planets, in our galaxy seems rather small when considering the potential for life. So what does this mean for our search for life? Well, it is important to remember that however difficult it may appear for life to emerge, it did so at least once in this galaxy. So there is still hope that it could, and has, happened elsewhere. We just have to find it.
