Kitchens I Have Loved

Warm and Cozy in the Hudson River Valley; Warm in Ojai, California

It is 10 degrees in my part of New York state today, so "warm and cozy" is definitely on my mind. ?For years I have saved two magazines showing the same house, seemingly the the very definition of warm and cozy. ?After scanning all the images of this house for you, I googled the owners' name and found the family living in an Ojai, California home in 2004, so I added these images also. ?Come join me as we view both homes and their locations, and decide if both homes have warm and cozy elements.

Don't let the July, 1993?date delude you; the home exudes warm and coziness when readers would think the issue would be full of only "beachiness".

See. ?(Don't your love the red paisley throw on the sleigh bed?) Cozy , right?

Right side of room with beautiful books and an antique painting.

And the requisite blazing fireplace.?

The study with a hanging tapestry, a find of the owner.

Dining room with more antiques and a painting I love.

Dining room close up.

Primitive armoire holding china, linen and cocktails. ?And another antique painting.

That I love the kitchen is no surprise. ?Yellow ware seems to be a particular favorite of the owners, but the cat seems unsure.

Master bedroom with its own roaring fire.

Bedroom and master bath details.

Note the touches of black throughout the house, acting like a unifying cord.

Guest bedroom.

Attractive owners of the house and collectors of antiques - Carol Gramm and Jack Bunce, both one-time models who met on a shoot.

Jumping ahead to November, 1994, we find the same home in?Martha Stewart Living.

The same dining room as above but now in its Thanksgiving finery. ?Love how the owners actually use their yellow ware.

Lorraine Bunce, Carolina's mother-in-law helps prepare sweet potatoes,

while Carolina bastes the turkey. ?Even now days after Thanksgiving and Christmas, this fare looks so delicious - especially in 10 degree weather.

Cat still a fixture, warm fireplace, and lovely cheese tray all speak to a cozy holiday.

Glimpse into sitting room from dining room.

Another view of dining room in Thanksgiving finery. ?Natural, simple and beautiful.

Host, Jack Bunce, and his guests.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Glimpse of a youngish Martha, and cranberry-filled pears.

Dessert table.

Carolina - chef, antique collector, decorator - rests after her job well done. ?Note that Jack will do all the clean up before morning - a tradition that needs to be followed by all families, especially mine.

Don't you agree the Bunce home illustrates many elements that make up warm and cozy: fireplaces all aglow, a touch of red in paisley throws and tapestries, library with leather books, carefully chosen antiques, a kitchen bursting with holiday cheer.

Now let's view the Bunce family after their move to Ojai, California. ?The following images were taken from the September 2004 issue of?Martha Stewart Decorating. ?During the time between the Thanksgiving above and the move to Ojai, Carolina founded her own design firm, Gramm Design.

Still the great yellow ware collection.

Still the pretty table scapes.

Still a great kitchen and antique oriental rug.?

Several of the paintings from the Hudson River Valley house. ?Clementines now adorn the table replacing pumpkins.

Wooden floors replaced now with tile ones. ?(Has the dog replaced the cats I wonder?)

Ah, still the antique daybed, painting, and a fireplace aglow. ?Is that a clementine tree I spy?

Antique bed? ?Antique chair and tile floor.

A very California and inviting exterior.

A 2004 picture of the Bunce family now including their 8-year-old son, Graham outside their Ojai home. ?(All these articles may be found on Carolina's website, www.grammdesign.com.)

What do we think? ?Can warm and cozy be transferred from a home on one chilly coast to a home on a warm one? ?I'd be interested in your opinion, and I will tell you mine in the next post. ?Till then, stay warm. ?

From a very nippy 10 degree,

b

Online marketing ? increasing your online presence. - WSI ...

Last updated 3 hours 36 minutes ago

In our contemporary, tech-filled society one might assume that the importance of website optimisation would be common knowledge. That said, a significant portion of businesses are still nowhere to be found on the web. However, this might be less damaging than a $200 website purchased from a foreign country.

These businesses are still treading water but late adopters might be burnt when then competition takes their market share. Small businesses fall under the late adopter?s category for several reasons including financial restraints, negative perception of online business as well as lack of trust.

There is a perception shared by some that the internet is ruining the economy - everyone is simply shopping around for the lowest possible price which eliminates customer loyalty. The fact of the matter is that appearances count for a significant amount of traffic. With this one must emphasize the importance of brand positioning.

A website that functions well is simply not enough ? it has to be accompanied by an aesthetically appealing look and a clear cut, simplistic conversion strategy. Once a potential client lands on your homepage they must be able to:

  • Define your offering ? your offering must me conveyed in a clear and concise manner. With a simple glance someone should be able to tell another exactly what it is that you offer. Put some time into your online property before you start an online marketing campaign.
  • Perceive positioning ? there is a certain level of product for each consumer and their respective needs. It is not necessary (and illegal) to frame your products as premium products if they are not high-end.
  • Communicate ? people should be able to contact you or be able to be led into the next step of the buying funnel from your homepage. A convoluted homepage equates to a more profitable competitor.

It is important to segment your website visitors and see it from their perspective. Remember that not every visitor is in the same stage of the buying funnel. You need to cater for all the types of people that will visit your website. The longer you get them to stay, the more likely they will convert from visitors to customers.

?

Paid online advertising

There are countless statistics on the web with regards to the amount of clicks that go to paid advertising as well as organic searches. The majority of these studies posit that organic searches are more likely to be clicked on. Why would you then invest in paid advertising?

The more impressions you make the better. Spreading awareness of who you are is the main driver to a good brand recognition strategy. Do not misinterpret, sales are important as your bottom line is what shows whether or not your business is successful. What you want to capitalise on is the referrals and leads created by brand recognition. A popular brand gets more phone calls which leads to business than a brand no one has heard of. Reserving your spot in the mind of the consumer is truly what you should be aiming for.

We see this reservation in many different forms from taglines, iconic logos, jingles and the most valuable of them all ? proprietary eponyms. An example of this would be how Kleenex has claimed the space in the consumers? mind with regards to tissues. People refer to any brand of tissues as Kleenexes. This happens due to successful market saturation of a brand. So remember, people do not invest in paid advertising solely for the purpose of getting more people to your homepage. Increase your visibility by also:

  • Expanding online property ? the more sites your business is active on, the more online property you own, the more visible you will be. Penetrate the online industry in as many ways as possible. This said, you have to be active ? no presence is better than a stagnating presence. Online marketing is easy to adopt but shows results a lot quicker if you have an active presence.
  • Focus on problems as well as solutions ? in terms of keywords, do not just focus on your products/services, focus on phrases depict the problem your business solves.
  • Networking ? as I mentioned last week. Online marketing has to be done in conjunction with telling more people about your offering and online presence. Putting a face to a brand, service or product helps to increase your visibility over time and will help you get your brand into social circles you might not have gotten I without networking.

We are always available to talk about online advertising and web development ideas. If you are interested getting more information on how to get more people to your homepage, visit www.simplifytheinternet.com.

Differentiating Sex and Love Addictions | Rehab Center

While love and sex are certainly not inseparable, romantic love only rarely exists without sexual involvement. For many people, sexual attraction is a critical component of loving their romantic partner. Sex and love are certainly both intense physical and emotional experiences, and like many such experiences they can give rise to obsession and even addiction.

However interconnected love and sex may be, love addiction and sex addiction are quite different phenomena. Like all forms of addiction, they do share some common ground. The pursuit of an addiction becomes the most important focus of an addict?s life, to the detriment of their relationships, work, and health. However, love and sex addictions generally manifest in very different ways, and stem from the need to satisfy disparate kinds of emotional needs.

The Effect on Relationships

While love and sex addictions can both destroy positive relationships or prevent the formation of positive relationships, the reasons for these struggles are in many ways as different as they could be.

For love addicts, an intense and binding relationship is the ultimate goal. They believe that finding love will give their lives purpose and stability, and a desperate need to find love leads them to develop rapid and obsessive attachments. The object of their attachment may change over time, but while relationships last they remain devoted almost to the point of worship.

In contrast, relationships lose priority for the sex addict along with their other interests and activities. Sex addicts in relationships are often unfaithful with multiple partners, as they are unable to satisfy their sex drive with a single partner. Many sex addicts also have frequent one night stands or even anonymous sexual partners. They may be in loving relationships, but the pursuit of sex becomes an irresistible compulsion even if that relationship begins to crumble.

The result for both love and sex addicts is often short and intense relationships in quick succession. The emotional instability and compulsive behavior that is universal in addicts certainly contributes to relationship failure in both disorders. Yet the failure of a love addict?s relationship often stems from unrealistic adoration and codependency, while a sex addict?s relationship more often fails due to neglect and unfaithfulness. Both addicts may make unrealistic demands of their partners, but the love addict?s demands are physical while the love addict?s demands are more likely to be emotional.

The Origin of the Addiction

Both love and sex addictions can arise from childhood or early young adult trauma that leaves the individual seeking desperately to fill the void inflicted by that trauma. Small events and genetic inclination can also more subtly influence the development of emotional needs and behavior that leads to these addictions.

However, love addicts and sex addicts are ultimately seeking different forms of satisfaction from different places. Sexual addiction is the pursuit of specific sex acts and encounters, regardless of who is able to provide those experiences. Sex addicts can gain equal satisfaction from one night stands and anonymous sex as from sex with a committed partner. When no partner is available, sex addicts can seek stimulus from masturbation, phone sex, pornography, voyeurism, or exhibitionism.

Love addicts are seeking the presence and love of a specific individual whom they believe will provide them with the passion and fulfillment that their lives have been missing. In some ways, these partners are just as anonymous as an anonymous sexual partner, because the object of a love addict?s affection is often a construct of their own minds and may bear little resemblance to the character and appearance of the actual person. Nevertheless, love addicts firmly believe that the individual(s) they become obsessed with are of paramount importance.

Worst Case Scenarios

The most extreme and destructive manifestations of sex addictions and love addictions help to highlight the different motivations behind these two obsessions.

When love addiction develops to extremes, individuals may refuse to sever relationships or injure themselves when relationships end. Without the stability and affirmation that a relationship provides, some love addicts will engage in self-mutilation or attempt suicide-they seek to punish their former partner, or feel that all meaning has gone from their lives. Love addicts may also become so obsessed with former or prospective partners that they become stalkers.

Sexual predation is an extreme manifestation of sexual addiction. Not all sexual predators are sex addicts, and relatively few sex addicts will commit molestation or rape. Nevertheless, some sex addicts do resort to forcing sexual encounters if they are not able to feed their sex drive in other ways.

Students treat robo-dogs at high-tech veterinary school

3 hrs.

Cornell University's Veterinary Center?is combining forces with their Center for Advanced Computing to create a powerful, futuristic simulated vet environment ? complete with robot dogs and cats. Students monitor, diagnose?and treat the robo-pets in a hands-on experience critical?for aspiring vets.

Anyone who has taken a first?aid course knows that simulated humans are a common thing, and there are similar practice?models for pets. But there's a difference between a rubber model you can do CPR on and something that behaves like a real person ? or dog.

That's what Cornell's?Dr.?Daniel Fletcher and his colleagues are attempting to do ? and not just with a better dog surrogate, but with a fully-functional model vet's office.

"The idea is to bridge preclinical lecture learning and actual clinical experience, letting students practice applying what?they've?learned in a safe setting before the stakes get high,"?explained Fletcher in a news release describing the research.

Over the last two years, the Veterinary Center has put together what must be the most sophisticated simulated vet's office in the world. Students can use real vet's tools to check the pulse, breathing, and other vital stats on a robot dog and cat (Robo-Jerry and Robo-Fluffy), and can practice doing injections and inserting catheters. Their work is recorded from multiple angles and can be reviewed later by professors and classmates.

As helpful as all this is, it's still only a fraction of the everyday duties and risks of a veterinarian. Fletcher told NBC News in an email that the current robo-dog is valuable but rudimentary. "It currently can't move to respond to stimulation, it can't bite to simulate a frightened pet for handling practicing, and has only simple physiologic feedback."

That's why he's working on Butch, successor to Robo-Jerry and bearer of many improvements. Fletcher says Butch will have more realistic skin and blood vessels, an improved airway, more space inside for electronics to simulate conditions, and articulating joints for a more authentic dog-like feel. It will also be based on cheaper, off-the-shelf components.

Inside, it's governed by a new open-source software system they call URSULA, which stands for Universal Realistic Simulation of a Living Animal. It will allow for more accurate simulation of animals' symptoms and response to treatments ? earlier software was based on human models, which were better than nothing but, as one might expect, highly inaccurate in some ways.

Fletcher cautioned that the vet center's?scope is limited:?"We're a small academic group, so progress is slow since we all have our regular responsibilities and are doing this as a side project."?

So while a robo-pig or robo-cow might be useful, don't expect one next year. But?the plan is to make the system publicly accessible, both so it can be used and so other academics can contribute. "We're really hoping that the open-source model will help move this along," Fletcher wrote ? "Only time will tell!"

What Te'o said to try to explain girlfriend hoax

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o tried to clear the air about how he fell into an online relationship with a fictitious woman he met online who called herself Lennay Kekua. His grief at her "death" became a major story during the college football season. The problem was Kekua was a hoax ? there was no such person.

Te'o spoke to ESPN for 2? hours on Friday evening at an IMG training facility in Florida where he is training for the NFL draft.

In question-and-answer form, these are some highlights of the way events unfolded, according to Te'o:

____

Q: WHEN DID TE'O'S ONLINE "RELATIONSHIP" WITH THE FAKE WOMAN BEGIN AND HOW DID IT DEVELOP?

A: Te'o says he received a Facebook friend request from Kekua in early 2010, his freshman year at Notre Dame. They were in contact on and off over the next couple of years and, as Te'o describes it, it naturally progressed until they started to get very close last April. At that time, Te'o was told by a person portraying Kekua's brother, that Lennay had been in a serious car accident. In the wake of that twist, Te'o began to talk to the girl much more frequently. He became hugely invested in her and was then told she had leukemia.

Kekua "died" on Sept. 12, the same day Te'o's real grandmother died. Te'o said he was grief-stricken and had a testy conversation with Kekua, then ? hours later ? the pranksters called and said his girlfriend was dead.

____

Q: SO TE'O NEVER SAW LENNAY KEKUA IN THE FLESH?

A: That's right. They had planned to meet up one time in San Diego during a long layover he had on his way home to Hawaii. That never happened because on April 28, Te'o says he was told, she got into a serious car accident. Te'o said he was told the accident put Kekua into a coma, and when she came out her recovery from serious injuries drew them closer. He started talking to a woman portraying Kekua every day.

He said before he returned from Hawaii to South Bend for preseason practice he had planned to meet up with her on California, but he had to cancel this time to attend a family reunion in Utah.

Te'o claims they tried to make video phone calls using Skype and FaceTime, but he said he could never see her face. She would say she could see him and tease him about being able to use the technology correctly.

____

Q: WAS TE'O IN ON THE SCAM?

A: He says no. Skeptics contend that his story is so fantastic it's hard to believe, that he couldn't be so gullible to have been fooled by the scam. Yet no one has come forward with hard evidence that pins down Te'o as being a participant. In the lengthy and detailed story by Deadspin.com that broke the news of the hoax, the strongest accusation that Te'o was one of the perpetrators was an unidentified friend of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the alleged mastermind of the prank, telling Deadspin he was "80 percent sure" that Manti Te'o was "in on it."

___

Q: THROUGHOUT THE SEASON, THOUGH, TE'O SPOKE ABOUT HIS DEAD GIRLFRIEND AS IF SHE WE A LIVING PERSON. HOW DOES HE EXPLAIN THAT?

A: This is where it gets complicated. Te'o says he thought his girlfriend was real, but when she died ? and word got out that he was playing through the deaths of both his grandmother and girlfriend ? he was embarrassed that he had only ever had contact with Kekua online and by phone. Already, he had lied to his father and told him that he had seen Kekua.

So, in Te'o's words, "I knew that ? I even knew that it was crazy that I was with somebody that I didn't meet, and that alone people find out that this girl who died I was so invested in, and I didn't meet her as well. So I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that, yeah, he met her before she passed away. So people wouldn't think that I was some crazy dude."

___

Q: HOW DID THE SCHEME UNRAVEL?

A: Te'o received a phone call on Dec. 6 from the Kekua's phone number. On the line was a woman who sounded like Kekua. He says he was confused, and thought it was one of her sisters. The woman was telling him a story about having to fake her death to evade drug dealers but not directly identifying herself. Te'o said "She kept going back and forth. 'It's me.'

"I eventually just gave up and said, 'Who is me?' And she said, 'It's Lennay.' So we carried on that conversation, and I just got mad. I just went on a rampage. How could you do this to me? I ended that conversation by saying, simply, this: 'You know what, Lennay, my Lennay died on Sept. 12. I don't know who you are, but Lennay died on Sept. 12th,' and that conversation ended."

Te'o said he didn't know what to think at that point and her continued to refer to Lennay as his "girlfriend." The woman contacted him again and the tales got even more confusing. He says he didn't think that Lennay wasn't real, he thought she might still be alive but that she was possibly toying with him.

He told his mother on Christmas Eve what was going on and his father on Christmas Day, and on Dec. 26th he told Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Bob Diaco. Within days, Notre Dame ordered an investigation.

Te'o told ESPN that not until the news broke earlier this week, and Tuiasosopo contacted him to apologize, did he finally realize Kekua wasn't real and the whole thing was a hoax.

___

Q: HOW ELABORATE WAS THE SCHEME?

A: Very, according to Te'o. The pranksters used multiple characters, they sent photos of the flowers Te'o sent for Lennay's "funeral" to him to show they arrived. Te'o claims they became agitated when he began to see another girl at Notre Dame in December, and a woman claiming to be Lennay's sister called Te'o's mother to complain about it.

Lennay had a large extended family, Te'o says he was told, including a young relative, a 9-year-old girl named Pookah. Te'o met her face-to-face, along with Tuiasosopo, when Notre Dame was in California in November to play USC.

___

Q: SO, IF IT WASN'T TE'O, WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HOAX?

The Deadspin story pointed to Tuiasosopo as being most involved, and Te'o said that the 22-year-old contacted him on Jan. 16 to apologize.

Te'o said the message went like this: "I have two people that I want to come clean with and that's you and your family. I'm not going to say anything to the press. I just want you to know the truth. And God bless, and blah, blah, blah."

Tuiasosopo has not yet spoken publicly about the situation.

___

Q: WHAT NEXT?

A: It seems no laws were broken, and Te'o has given no indication he wants to pursue a civil suit against the pranksters. Unless someone comes forward to refute Te'o's claims, or new evidence is unearthed contradicting what he has said, the next people he'll need to answer to are NFL coaches and executives.

Te'o will likely attend the combine in February and there he will start doing job interviews with prospective new employers. He has been projected as a potential high first-round pick. The first round is held the night of April 25 in New York City.

Capture the essence of the Ubuntu lockscreen with Ubuntu Live Wallpaper

Android Central

I don't use live wallpapers traditionally. I find that too often there's a trade off in device performance and or battery life to make it worthwhile. I've made an exception to try this one out, and I'm pretty happy with it. Ubuntu Live Wallpaper tries to capture some of the feel of that great looking lockscreen on Ubuntu for Phones, in a live wallpaper for your Android device. And, while it isn't an exact replica, it's pretty close, and looks great. Currently still in beta, the developers describe it as their "hobby." But for a beta product, it's very well done.

One of my biggest annoyances with live wallpapers as I mentioned is performance and battery life issues. Even on high end devices, too often things become jerky and the battery life has just been sucked dry. So far, on the Nexus 4 at least, this hasn't been the case with Ubuntu Live Wallpaper. Battery life doesn't seem to be any less than usual, and scrolling through the homescreens -- in my case with Action Launcher -- is as smooth and speedy as ever.

There's a couple of features baked in too worth mentioning, and some due to arrive in future updates. A double tap anywhere on the wallpaper brings up the option to display either time, or remaining battery percentage. Coming in the future will be the ability to switch between 12 and 24 hour clocks, repositioning the circle, scaling and color change.

Remember though that this is still a beta product, and the developers are all to aware of performance issues affecting some devices. But, it's free, and worth a look if you're looking for a little flavor of Ubuntu for Phones without getting too deep. You'll find it in the Play Store at the link above, and click on past the break for some screenshots.

US official: 2 more Americans die in Algeria

Algerian firemen prepare to unload a refrigerated truck with bodies killed during the hostage taking at a gas plant at the morgue in Ain Amenas, Algeria, Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. At least 81 people have been reported dead, including 32 Islamist militants, after a bloody, four-day hostage situation at Algeria's remote Ain Amenas natural gas plant. Nearly two dozen foreign workers remained unaccounted for late Sunday. (AP Photo/Anis Belghoul)

(AP) ? Two additional Americans were killed in last week's hostage standoff at a natural gas complex in Algeria, bringing the final U.S. death toll to three, an Obama administration official said Monday.

Seven Americans made it out safely.

The deceased Americans were identified as Victor Lynn Lovelady and Gordon Lee Rowan, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter. The official had no details on how the Americans died, and their hometowns were not released. The FBI has recovered the bodies of and notified the families.

Militants who attacked the Ain Amenas gas field in the Sahara had offered to release the pair in exchange for the freedom of two prominent terror suspects jailed in the United States: Omar Abdel Rahman, a blind sheik convicted of plotting to blow up New York City landmarks and considered the spiritual leader of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani scientist convicted of shooting at two U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

The Obama administration rejected the offer outright.

Last week's desert siege began Wednesday when Mali-based, al-Qaida-linked militants attempted to hijack two buses at the plant, were repelled, and then seized the gas refinery. They said the attack was retaliation for France's recent military intervention against Islamist rebels in neighboring Mali, but security experts argue it must have taken weeks of planning to hit the remote site.

One American death was confirmed Friday, that of Texas resident Frederick Buttaccio. And five Americans had been taken out of the country before Saturday's final assault by Algerian forces against the militants.

The U.S. official said two further Americans survived the four-day crisis at an insecure oil rig at the facility. They were flown out to London on Saturday.

The overall death toll from the standoff has surpassed 80.

Algeria said after Saturday's assault by government forces that at least 32 extremists and 23 hostages of all nationalities were killed. On Sunday, the Algerian bomb squads found 25 more bodies, according to a security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. And a wounded Romanian who had been evacuated later died.

With good reason.

Three months earlier, in September 1999, the Mars Climate Orbiter had arrived at the red planet, only to burn up in the atmosphere instead of taking up its intended orbit. Now, on Dec. 3, NASA officials were nervous about the fate of the Mars Polar Lander as it approached the planet, even though they had taken all the precautions they could to prevent a similar mishap.

"The tension was palpable," recalls Scott Hubbard, then a deputy director at NASA's Ames Research Center Laboratory, who was at the event. "Everyone was on edge."

Their anxiety turned out to be prophetic. When the $110 million lander finally touched down on the planet, it did so with all the subtlety of Wile E. Coyote's anvil falling off the cliff. Investigators later posited that the most likely cause was a bogus "I've landed" signal sent to the computerized flight-control system when, in fact, the lander was still 131 feet up. It had deployed its legs as planned. But that triggered an errant signal that caused the landing rockets to shut down prematurely, leaving the craft to crash into Mars at about 50 miles per hour. Controllers were never able to make contact with the lander or the two probes it ferried.

The debacle marked a low point in NASA's decades-old quest to explore Mars. The loss of the lander was the third failure in six years. In the 13 years since, however, the effort has undergone a remarkable turnaround. The agency has overseen the most comprehensive, systematic ? and successful ? effort to investigate another planet since the dawn of the Space Age. A string of six triumphant orbiters, landers, and rovers has helped unlock mysteries about a planet that has captivated humans since the Babylonians.

Now, as the most sophisticated rover humans have ever sent into the cosmos inches its way along the planet's ruddy surface, mankind may be reaching a hinge moment in the study of Mars. Curiosity's slow journey across Gale Crater marks a shift from tracing the history of water on Mars to focusing on efforts that could help answer a question humans have been asking since Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens drew up the first practical sketches of the planet in the mid-1600s: Did Mars ever host life?

Curiosity's landing alone was euphoric for NASA: Its soft touchdown in August, at the end of a "sky crane" tether, heralded a new era of precision landings that was watched by millions around the world, creating a triumphant moment for an often-beleaguered space agency.

Centimeter by centimeter, Curiosity is hunting for evidence that Gale, a desiccated ding in the planet's surface with a central peak towering 18,000 feet above the crater floor, may have harbored conditions that permitted primitive life to exist early in Mars' history. But that's just one spot on the planet ? akin to trying to figure out the biological history of Earth by landing solely in rural Chile (which scientists often use as a stand-in for Mars).

Hundreds join pro-gun rallies in state capitals

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Hundreds of people are gathering in state capitals nationwide to rally against stricter gun control measures.

An estimated 600 people turned out so far for Saturday speeches in Austin, Texas. Many are carrying signs with messages such as "An Armed Society is a Polite Society" and "The Second Amendment Comes from God."

Meanwhile, police say hundreds more joined rallies in New England while organizers also have plans to gather in capital cites to the west.

Activists have promoted the "Guns Across America" rallies primarily via social media. They're being held days after President Barack Obama unveiled a sweeping package of gun-control proposals.

First-term Texas state Rep. Steve Toth is among attendees in Austin. He's one of several state officials nationwide who've proposed trying to curb federal gun restrictions in states.

No Question of Anxiety Go for Unsecured Online Finance | Good Info ...

Where is the end of anxiety when shortage of cash does not allow a person to meet demands which are really unavoidable? People who have tangible property may risk the same if they look for finance available in secured category. There are plenty of finance institutions or agencies which come forward to assist those finance seekers. On the other hand, the borrowers can keep their assets untouched if they like to have an access to online unsecured loans CA. The same is also ideal for the people who are non-homeowners or who do not have property of worth in this sense.

Online unsecured loans CA can be secured within shorter time. Actually, the finance agencies want to finish the job as quick as possible. They advise the loan seekers to follow online mode of loan application. Consumption of time is remarkably less in this mode. The borrowers are to enter some primary information (name of the borrower, bank statement details, proof of address etc for example) in a very simple type of online form. Online submission of loan application helps the applicants in maintaining privacy, because the lending agencies take advantage of encryption technology.

The borrowers can make use of the fund as they would consider it right. They can try to clear important bills and also can manage several demands like funding for child's education, wedding budget, holidaying, reconstruction of any part of the home etc. The finance does not require collateral. Hence, it is a great relief.

With online unsecured loans CA, the finance seekers can obtain an amount in the range between $1,000 and $25, 000 subject to their income potential. The lenders assess financial condition of the applicants and fix the amount that will be paid. The borrowers should be careful in repaying the loan amount and they should respect the repayment program. If they do not or cannot repay the monthly installments, they are charged with fines.

People are worried of their credit status, if they have weaker credit score (that is, less than 600 marks as per FICO). They need not be upset and they can apply for online unsecured loans CA for which the lenders set aside the credit record when they review the loan application. People residing in Canada are eligible for this variety of cash programs provided that they are adult and that they are citizens of Canada. They must earn substantially in every month through employment of permanent kind. It is an imperative that they hold a bank account, valid and active.

German inflation rises to 2.1 percent in December

(AP) ? German inflation ticked up in December, for an annual 2012 rate of 2 percent overall for Europe's largest economy.

The Federal Statistics Office reported Tuesday that prices in December were up 2.1 percent compared to the same month in 2011, up from 1.9 percent in November.

Price increases in 2012 came largely from the energy sector, which saw an overall increase of 5.7 percent for the year.

The rate is down slightly from 2011's 2.3 percent, though up from 2010's 1.1 percent and 2009's 0.4 percent.

The European Central Bank's target is to set policy to achieve an inflation rate of just below 2 percent.

New Meningitis Vaccine Paralyzes 40 Children in Africa

by?Christina England
VacTruth.com

The details of a vaccine campaign disaster that occurred last month in a north African country continue to unfold, while headlines of this tragedy are strangely absent from news organizations around the world. VacTruth shared the story last week with the world in an exclusive report, and we have additional updates to share with you about the plight these families are now facing.

On January 6, 2013, I wrote an article entitled?Minimum of 40 Children Paralyzed After New Meningitis Vaccine?describing how at least 40 children in Gouro, Chad, located in northern Africa, became paralyzed after they had received the meningitis A vaccine, MenAfrivac. [1]

Further research about the Meningitis Vaccine Project shows the effort was a massive collaboration among major organizations. The vaccine, developed by the India Serum Institute, was funded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in partnership with WHO and PATH, specifically to combat meningitis in Africa. We wonder why none of these groups are offering a statement about this devastating event.

A TIMELINE OF DISTURBING EVENTS

On January 8, 2013, Mr. M., who wishes to remain anonymous, managed to leak television footage from the local television station TeleTchad, showing the Prime Minister of Chad, Emmanuel Nadingar, making an impromptu visit to one of two hospitals accommodating the sick children in hopes of reassuring parents and children. [2]

On January 9, 2013, a full-page article was published by?La Voix, entitled The Fate of the Paralyzed Children is Worrying.?La Voix, a print-only publication, reported that one parent, speaking from the bedside of her sick son, told reporters that some time after receiving the vaccination, three of the children became ill and their health became increasingly disturbing.

Another citizen told the newspaper,??It took three to four people just to stabilize the children. Panicked by the turn of events, the team took to their heels.?

On January 10, 2013, an article was published by the?Journal Du Chad?titled?Chad: A Vaccine Against Meningitis Caused Casualties, reporting that fifty children aged between 1 and 29 years were admitted to two hospitals, the Hospital of the Mother and Child and the General Hospital National Reference. [3]

Bemadji Benoit, journalist for the?Journal Du Tchad, wrote that on day one of the vaccination program, three of the children were said to have become ill, suffering from convulsions, vomiting, headaches, and diarrhea. Their conditions were described as critical. Worried by what had happened to their children, parents reported that they had tried to alert the vaccinators but said that the team continued with the vaccination program.

WHAT WENT WRONG??

?

By watching this video, you will have learned that the following organizations were involved with the MenAfriVac vaccination project:

  • CDC ? Centers for Disease Control
  • FDA ? Food and Drug Administration
  • BMGF ? The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • PATH ? Program for Appropriate Technology in Health
  • MVP ? Meningitis Vaccine Project
  • WHO ? World Health Organization
  • UNICEF ? United Nations International Children?s Emergency Fund

So, let us examine what information some of these organizations have shared about this vaccine. Most of them make statements that contradict recommendations from the manufacturer of MenAfriVac.

THE CDC

The CDC provided a statement about the new meningitis vaccine on their website:

?The ?Meningitis Belt? in Africa includes 26 of the world?s poorest countries. Frequent outbreaks and sporadic explosive epidemics result in tens of thousands of meningitis cases. Elimination of this disease could reduce morbidity and mortality, disabilities, and countries? health expenditures.

CDC?s work in meningitis prevention spans several decades and was important in establishing the burden of disease that contributed to the investment case for development of and the mass campaigns that first introduced MenAfriVac? in Burkina Faso in 2010. This meningococcal A conjugate vaccine was developed specifically to combat epidemic meningitis in sub-Saharan Africa by a consortium of partners including CDC, PATH, WHO, FDA, the Health Protection Agency and the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.??[4]

THE MENINGITIS VACCINE PROJECT

According to the Meningitis Vaccine Project, the MenArfriVac vaccine was specifically designed to meet the needs of Africa?s Meningitis Belt because the vaccine can be transported and stored for as long as four days without refrigeration or icepacks. [5]

THE WHO

The World Health Organization repeated similar information on their website, clearly stating:

?The meningitis A vaccine known as MenAfriVac?, created to meet the needs of Africa?s meningitis belt, can now be kept in a controlled temperature chain (CTC) at temperatures of up to 40?C for up to four days.??[6]

THE BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION

And The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which funded the project, also gave similar information:

?Banikoara is home to the world?s first controlled temperature chain (CTC ) campaign. MenAfriVac, a vaccine produced by Serum Institute of India through the Bill & Melinda Gates-funded Meningitis Vaccine Project a partnership between WHO and PATH, is the first vaccine to be prequalified by WHO for use at ambient temperatures of up to 40?C for up to four days.??[7]

PATH

On its website, PATH, a nonprofit global health organization, emphasized the importance of partnerships in the development of MenAfrivac, praising the role of the U.S. government for making the vaccine a reality. The US government assisted with the campaign by offering funding, improving surveillance of the disease, addressing regulatory issues, providing technical expertise to India Serum, developing the conjugation method used in the vaccine, facilitating licensure of U.S.-based intellectual property, and testing the immune response of clinical trial participants. [8]

UNICEF

UNICEF, another major organization involved with the vaccination program, stated on their website:

?On October 31, 2012, MenAfriVac? received approval to be kept outside the cold chain for up to four days at up to 40?C, in a controlled temperature chain (CTC). MenAfriVac? is the first vaccine intended for use in Africa approved for this type of use, potentially setting a regulatory path that other heat-stable vaccines can follow.??[8]

WHAT THE MANUFACTURER SAID

However, in 2010, the manufacturer of MenAfriVac, Serum Institute of India, stated completely different information:

?MenAfriVac should be stored and transported between 2-8?C. Protect from light. The diluent should be stored at 25?C. It is recommended to protect the reconstituted vaccine from direct sunlight.??[9]

These words from Serum Institute lead us to ask the vital question,??Can MenAfriVac be stored outside the cold chain?

WAS THIS VACCINE PROPERLY LICENSED?

In April 2012, OPTIMIZE Immunization Systems and Technologies for Tomorrow shared additional information about the MenAfriVac vaccine in a document authored by two individuals from PATH and one individual from WHO. The document, entitled?MenAfriVac? Planned for Use in a Controlled Temperature Chain, contained key evidence about the lack of appropriate licensure for this vaccine to be used outside of the cold chain:

?Unpublished data obtained from the vaccine manufacturer show that MenAfriVac has proven stable at temperatures of 40?C for limited periods of time. This indicates that the vaccine could be safely distributed outside of the 2?C to 8?C range for a specific period under controlled conditions during campaign activities. The data are currently being reviewed and Serum Institute of India plans to formally submit the request for a MenAfriVac license variation within the next few months.??[10]

So, was a revised license ever granted for the use of MenAfriVac?

Apparently not. According to the report of a meeting which took place in October 2012 between the World Health Organization?s Immunizations, Vaccines and Biologicals group and the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee (IPAC), the vaccine would not be endorsed until 2013, at the earliest:

?The session began with an introduction by Mr. Michel Zaffran, who highlighted the groundbreaking progress made with MenAfriVac?, which will be the first EPI vaccine licensed for use in a controlled temperature chain (CTC).?

?? This is the final review of the document by IPAC prior to the planned field testing during the MenAfriVac? campaign in Benin in November 2012, where one district will use the vaccine in a CTC. After the field testing has been conducted, the revised final guidance document will come back to IPAC for endorsement in 2013.?[11]

CONCLUSION

As the days turn into weeks, the paralyzed children continue to lie in their hospital beds, immobile and frightened. Their parents feel confused and worried about their children?s future health. These families deserve an explanation of how this tragedy was allowed to happen and reassurance for their new future.

This project was organized and paid for by the leading organizations governing vaccines today, groups with millions of dollars available to make sure vaccines are as safe as possible. Why did these groups ignore the advice of the India Serum Institute, which stated that their product must be stored within a specific cold temperature range? Why have none of these organizations issued a statement about what happened to these paralyzed children? Who is going to explain how the vaccines were stored and transported? What is the African government going to do to help the children and parents at the heart of this vaccination disaster?? How many children must be injured before the use of the MenAfriVac vaccine is suspended?

Used-car buyers should protect themselves against salvage ...

Thousands upon thousands of sea-water-sodden cars and trucks were ruined in flooding caused by ?Superstorm? Sandy last October. Now, many of those same cars, written off as total losses by insurance companies, are flooding regional auto auctions as salvage sales.

The New York Times chronicled on Sunday how flooded cars sold briskly at the Manheim car auction at prices ranging from $2,600 to $5,300. The newspaper reported that some of the cars were bound to be dismantled for parts, while others were headed for overseas car markets. But the paper warned that some flooded cars could end up on used car lots here in the United States, due to inconsistencies in state titling laws.

Upon seeing the news report, Brett Corcoran, general sales manager at LB Smith Ford Lincoln in Lemoyne, immediately took to Facebook and Twitter to assure his customers that the dealership?s trained used car buyers were on guard against Sandy-saturated vehicles.

?We?re on high alert to make sure they don?t re-emerge in our market here,? Corcoran said. ?We?re paying attention. We?re trained and we are paying attention. None of our local customers need to worry.?

In addition, Central Pennsylvania car dealers said buyers can take several steps to protect themselves from getting stung by Sandy-soaked cars and trucks.

For starters, pay attention to the car?s title by using title search services, such as CarFax. Tell-tale red flags include a flurry of title changes among several states over a short period of time, said John Rickards, president of Bobby Rahal Automotive Group Harrisburg Area, based in Silver Spring Twp. Rickards warned that such title activity could be cover for ?washing? the title of its status as a salvaged vehicle.

Also, buyers should beware to check the vehicle?s trunk, including the spare tire well, for signs of flooding, including mildew and sand. It?s a good idea to pull back any loose carpet, looking for these same signs.

?There is only so much on a flood damaged car that you can clean up,? Rickards noted. ?We know all the signs and we can check for them.?

Added Corcoran: ?Someone trying to pull the wool over your eyes sometimes forgets the nooks and crannies.?

Lastly, check all electrical systems ? everything from brake lights to turn signals ? for signs of a saltwater-caused short. That?s the biggest concern for Sandy-flooded vehicles ? namely, the very real possibility that costly electrical systems and components will fail after being marinated in brackish water from the storm surge.

?Saltwater damage to the electrical system would be the first concern ? not rust,? Rickards said. ?Salt gets into the connectors and does a slow deterioration. The car will be plagued with electrical problems through its whole life. And with the expense of the electrical components and what it costs to repair those, there is just no way to make that car reliable.?

All that said, Rickards maintained that local car buyers shouldn?t have too much to fear from Sandy-tainted vehicles. Most reputable used car dealers are already on the look-out for signs of flooded vehicles because their reputations and businesses are on the line, too. Indeed, the real wave of flooded cars is headed mostly overseas -- to countries where the laws and standards are much more lax.

?A lot of those cars will end up overseas,? Rickards concluded. ?I don?t think a heavy percentage of them will end up in the U.S.?

?We were more concerned after Katrina,? added Corcoran, saying it would have been easier for title-washed vehicles from the deep south to wind up in Central Pennsylvania. ?I don?t think there are many people in New Jersey who are going to use our local auctions to manipulate people into buying any of these vehicles.?
