Earl Scruggs, Bluegrass Legend, Passes Away at 88
Earl Scruggs, a prolific bluegrass artist who popularized the three-finger method of banjo-picking that came to be known as "Scruggs style," has died.
"Earl Scruggs, the most important banjo player who ever lived, has passed on," Steve Martin tweeted after news broke that he'd passed. He was 88.
The North Carolina native, who died of natural causes yesterday, released at least 29 live and studio albums over the years. And he also wrote this:
Scruggs wrote the music and sang "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," aka The Beverly Hillbillies theme song, with Lester Flatt and singer Jerry Scoggins.
He won his first Grammy in 1969 for the instrumental "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and followed up with his second in 2002 for a re-recording of it.
That version featured Martin on banjo, with Paul Shaffer, Leon Russell, Vince Gill, Albert Lee and Marty Stuart, on 2001's Earl Scruggs and Friends.
He received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2008.

When Derek Sivers was a young man, he met his mentor Kimo Williams. Sivers was about to attend Berklee College of Music and that?s when Williams changed his life.
Kimo?s high expectations set a new pace for me. He taught me ?the standard pace is for chumps? ? that the system is designed so anyone can keep up. If you?re more driven than ?just anyone? ? you can do so much more than anyone expects. And this applies to ALL of life ? not just school.
Before I met him, I was just a kid who wanted to be a musician, doing it casually.
Ever since our five lessons, high expectations became my norm, and still are to this day. Whether music, business, or personal ? whether I actually achieve my expectations or not ? the point is that I owe every great thing that?s happened in my life to Kimo?s raised expectations. That?s all it took. A random meeting and five music lessons to convince me I can do anything more effectively than anyone expects.

Online Video Market Revenues Seen to Grow Fourfold in 2020 ...
ACCORDING to latest studies on the ever-evolving internet industry, profits from the online video market are seen to grow four-fold by 2020.
Advertisers and marketers in the United Kingdom?s television and broadcast business were surveyed by MTM on how they view the online market in the next 8 years.
More than 77 percent, or three-quarters, expect solid growth in revenues and are optimistic about their overall financial performance.
Presented at the Guardian Changing Media Summit, the results also showed that businesses predict revenues from online ads to grow more than 300 percent by 2020.
On top of this, a study conducted by the Red Bee Media revealed that nearly 60 percent of respondents forecast brand placement advertising-funded programs to emerge as a very important source of profits.
Chief executive officer Bill Patricio said that if the last decade has witnessed the convergence of broadcast networks with broadband, it is possible that the remnants of the coming years will experience a rivalry between changing patterns of consumption and business models steered by consumer demand.
The study also found that more than 70 percent of the respondents are certain that the competition for quality online video content will rise intensely in the coming years.
Patricio emphasized that online media firms will need to put up a good fight and find more innovative ways in the rapidly changing online landscape if they are to take advantage of the market and succeed.
Online empires like YouTube and Google may be among the firms that have the most chance of benefiting in the online video war.
Based on a separate review conducted by eMarketer, online video advertising will have a bigger share of web marketing spending.
The firm predicts the medium to double its revenue share in ad spending to 16 percent in 2016. Online video remains to be the fastest growing advertising format on the internet, with budget allocation increasing by over 50 percent this year.
Meanwhile, a scarcity of quality ads inventory will be the main challenge for online video, but the issue can be easily resolved, if not turned into a benefit.

There are calls for better labelling on food to help people consume less calories
Food and drink companies have promised to cut calories in their products to help tackle obesity in the UK.
The 17 firms, which include Coca-Cola, Subway and Tesco, have signed up to the government scheme.
The Department of Health says England has one of Europe?s highest obesity rates and that consuming too many calories is the root of the problem.
Among ideas to help consumers will be resealable packaging on many chocolate bars, including Cadbury?s Dairy Milk.
Under the new scheme, every chocolate bar made by Mars will have a cap of 250 calories, while the UK arm of Coca Cola says it will introduce a 30% reduction in some of its soft drinks by 2014.
And some supermarkets, such as Asda, will develop a new low calorie brand.
But Labour says the scheme is not the change needed in the nation?s diet, favouring instead better food labelling and shielding children from adverts for junk food should be the starting point.

Walter Offutt scored 21 points, D.J. Cooper had 19 and No. 13 seed Ohio beat South Florida 62-56 on Sunday night to advance to the Midwest Regional semifinals.
"This is amazing," said Offutt, a transfer from Ohio State by way of Wright State. "It's one thing to talk about it and one thing to actually do it. This has been unreal, but let's just continue the run."
Ohio is the seventh team seeded No. 13 or higher to advance to the regional semifinals and the first since No. 13 Bradley did it in 2006. None of those teams won its next game.
The Bobcats (29-7), who opened the tournament with an upset against fourth-seeded Michigan, will play No. 1 seed North Carolina in St. Louis on Friday in their first trip to the round of 16 since they lost to the Wolverines in the regional finals in 1964.
Ohio trailed by two when Offutt swished a 3-pointer, launching a 10-0 run for the Bobcats. A pair of free throws by Cooper made it 54-46 with 3:28 left.
The Bobcats had a 59-53 lead when Toarlyn Fitzpatrick connected for South Florida's first 3-pointer of the half. But Cooper went 3 for 4 from the line while the Bulls missed three shots in the final 36 seconds.
"I do think our guys have a chip on their shoulder," said Ohio coach John Groce, who has led the Bobcats to two NCAA tournaments in his four seasons with the team. "I think our guys look forward to playing on the big stage against quality competition."
Victor Rudd Jr. and Anthony Collins scored 13 points apiece and Augustus Gilchrist had 12 for the Bulls (22-14), who were playing in their third game in five days with a travel day in between. South Florida beat California on Wednesday and Temple on Friday night in the second round.
If fatigue was a concern for South Florida, it didn't show. The Bulls relied on their stingy defense to limit Ohio to just 30.4 percent shooting in the first half.
Although the Bulls managed to keep the Bobcats away from the rim, they couldn't stop them at the perimeter. Half of Ohio's second-half buckets were 3s, and the Bobcats finished 9 of 18 from long range.
"It really seemed like they hadn't missed any 3s in the second half," Collins said. "We just didn't execute our defensive assignments the right way. They got open and made the shots."
Two of their five treys in the second half came after either a flagrant or technical foul.
Rudd was called for the flagrant, and Offutt hit both of his free throws and a 3-pointer that tied it at 31 with 15:52 to play.

The Big East's top scoring defensive team and the Mid-American Conference tournament champions turned out to be a good match for one another.
Strong defense from both sides turned the first half into a slow-paced affair. South Florida managed just 40.7 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.
The Bobcats had the hot hand first. D.J. Cooper sank a 3-pointer, Reggie Keely hit a pair of free throws and a steal by T.J. Hall led to a layup by Cooper that gave Ohio a 12-6 lead 6 minutes into the game.
Victor Rudd Jr. answered with a resounding alley-oop dunk on a pass from Anthony Collins that launched a 13-1 run by the Bulls. A 3-pointer by Rudd gave them a 19-13 lead with 5:31 in the first half, and South Florida held a 27-21 lead at halftime.
Ohio stayed in the game with its perimeter shooting, going 4 for 10 from long range in the first half, while South Florida relied on its size. The Bulls outscored the Bobcats 16-6 in the paint in the first half.
"We didn't do anything differently (in the second half)," Offutt said. "Coach told us to come out and swing aggressively from the start. We went out there and played aggressively and hit some shots. We were fortunate to beat a tough team at the end and got the win."

Bardot-themed art trove to be sold in London
The art collection of the late German-born playboy Gunter Sachs, featuring works celebrating his obsession with his former wife Brigitte Bardot, is to be auctioned in London on May 22-23.
The star lot to go under the hammer at Sotheby's is an Andy Warhol portrait of Bardot which Sachs commissioned in 1974, five years after the couple divorced, which is estimated to fetch up to ?4 million ($6.3 million, 4.8 million euros), the auction house said Tuesday.
Sachs wooed Bardot by having a helicopter fly over her villa on the French Riviera and shower her with hundreds of red roses.
The couple married a few weeks later on July 14, 1966, in Las Vegas.
A 1959 photograph of the French bombshell by Richard Avedon, shot a few years after she had risen to international stardom, is also up for sale with an estimate of ?40,000 to ?60,000.
The focus of the collection is a group of Pop Art masterpieces by Warhol, Tom Wesselmann and Roy Lichtenstein that Sachs acquired in the late 1960s and 1970s.
Sachs, who committed suicide last year aged 78, commissioned many of the pieces himself or purchased them directly from the artists for his apartment in the Swiss ski resort of St Moritz.
One of the other outstanding pieces is Warhol's "Flowers", a canvas epitomising the bold colours of the Pop Art movement, which is expected to sell for between ?3 million and ?4 million.
Sachs and Warhol became lifelong friends. In 1972, Sachs put on Warhol's first major European exhibition at his Hamburg gallery. He spared Warhol's blushes by secretly purchasing half the works when there were few buyers.
Cheyenne Westphal, chairman of Contemporary Art at Sotheby's Europe, said the combination of Sachs' taste and Bardot's influence "makes this assemblage among the most desirable single owner collections ever to come to market".
When Sachs took his life at his Swiss chalet in May, his relatives released a suicide note in which he explained he took his life because of what he dubbed the "no hope illness A", thought to be Alzheimer's.
Bardot said she was "literally destroyed" by the news of his death.

Bugs in drugs? Behind shortage of critical meds

In a move that highlights dilemmas plaguing the U.S. drug supply, federal regulators warned a major manufacturer about problems including bugs in vials of sterile drugs?-- insects, literally?-- the same?day that health officials allowed the firm to ramp up scarce medications for kids with cancer.
Food and Drug Administration officials on Tuesday posted a warning letter?sent to APP Pharmaceuticals LLC?of Schaumberg, Ill., citing violations at a New York plant that included insects found in clean rooms and in vials of distributed drugs and failure to report defects such as vials contaminated with foreign matter and glass.
The firm also had problems with documenting sterile technique and?was marketing unapproved drugs, according to the warning.
?It is apparent that APP Pharmaceuticals LLC?s has failed to implement global corrective actions,? it said.
The letter was dated Feb. 22, the same day that APP announced?it had received accelerated FDA approval to market supplies of preservative-free methotrexate to help ease a critical shortage of the medication used to treat childhood leukemia.
Earlier this month, FDA officials and cancer doctors had said the drug was in such short supply, hospitals could have run out within two weeks, jeopardizing life-saving treatment for kids with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or A.L.L., as well as patients with other illnesses.
?I am delighted that in many cases APP Pharmaceuticals has helped to minimize shortages by significantly increasing our production,? John Ducker, the firm?s president and chief executive said in a statement last week. ?APP Pharmaceuticals is a subsidiary of the German firm Fresenius Kabi Pharmaceuticals Holding Inc.
The timing was not lost on Erin Fox, manager of the Drug Information Service at the University of Utah, which tracks the nation?s drug shortages.
?This is what I mean when I keep talking about quality issues,? said Fox, citing ongoing manufacturing problems at several U.S. plants, including APP. ?All of these companies have had quality issues, yet they make the majority of drugs used in our country.?
The U.S. has logged record numbers of drug shortages in the past two years, fueled in part by sudden closures of drug plants because of problems with contamination, crumbling infrastructure and other issues, FDA documents show.
APP officials said the warning letter, which focused on problems at the firm?s Grand Isle, N.Y., plant,?and the company?s efforts to ease the drug shortage?crisis?were two different issues.
?Methotrexate is not manufactured at the Grand Island plant and, thus, is absolutely unaffected from the warning letter,? Matthias Link, a company spokesman, wrote in an e-mail to msnbc.com.
The violations followed an FDA inspection last summer, June 13 to July 8, and the company had ?already begun taking actions on most of the items listed,? Link noted.
?We take all the issues listed in the warning letter very seriously and we are committed to promptly addressing these,? he wrote.
The firm has 15 days from the date of the FDA letter to respond to the problems, including how insects came to be found in an aseptic, or sterile, room used to produce crucial drugs.
?You continued to find insects in your manufacturing area, in finished product (two vials), and you received a complaint for an insect in a distributed vial,? said the letter sent by Ronald M. Pace, director of the FDA?s New York district.
Company officials told FDA inspectors the root cause of the bug problem was with the firm?s supplier of gowns, but they had not scheduled an audit of the firm until six months later, December 2011, the warning said.
FDA officials did not immediately respond to msnbc.com questions about the timing of the warning letter and the expanded approval of APP to make injection-free methotrexate.
Agency officials last week announced they?d narrowly averted two dire shortages: first, the methotrexate scarcity, and then an?ongoing shortage of the drug Doxil, used to treat ovarian and other cancers.
The agency licensed a foreign firm, Sun Pharma, temporarily to supply Lipodox, a replacement chemotherapy drug, to the U.S. market.
Balancing the demand for life-saving drugs with the demand that those drugs be safe and sterile is an ongoing challenge, noted Fox.
?Between the shortages and the quality issues, it is difficult to have any kind of confidence in our drug supply,? she said.
