'Cosmopolis' Isn't For 'Team Edward Girls,' Jay Baruchel Says

David Cronenberg's next film, "Cosmopolis," may have won MTV's Movie Brawl thanks to the support of die-hard Robert Pattinson fans, but one of his co-stars told MTV News the film will be far from what Twilighters are expecting.
While promoting "Goon," a film he stars in and co-wrote, Jay Baruchel shared his experiences working for a short period of time on the Manhattan set of "Cosmopolis." Unfortunately for the Pattinson fans out there, according to Baruchel, Cronenberg's next movie might be too strange for them.
"An exceedingly strange movie," Baruchel said, describing "Cosmopolis." "All the Team Edward girls won't be seeing this one, I don't think."
For Baruchel, working with Cronenberg — who made a name for himself with horror films — was a dream come true. "Basically, it was that Cronenberg is a hero of mine. I'm a Canadian boy. I love horror. That's all I want to do," Baruchel said. "If you're a Canadian horror fan, Cronenberg's the Holy Grail."
The opportunity for Baruchel came about in a rather mundane way, but his reaction to it was anything but. "I was in Manhattan last year, keeping my lady company, and they called up and were like, 'Hey, do you want to do two days on this new Cronenberg?' I said, 'Yep!' 'Wait, wait. We'll send you the script.' I couldn't care less; what I'm playing is a means to an end. I just want to go and film-nerd-out about 'Videodrome' with him for two days."
The actual experience of working with Cronenberg did not disappoint. "Not only did I get to go and be a fly on the wall for two days and watch one of my heroes do his thing, I actually had the pleasure being directed by him," Baruchel said. "Coolest thing ever."

AeroShot didn?t require FDA review before hitting the U.S. market because it?s sold as a dietary supplement. But New York?s U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said he met with FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg and she agreed to review the safety and legality of AeroShot.

?We need to make sure that AeroShot does not become the next Four Loko by facilitating dangerous levels of drinking among teenagers and college students,? Schumer said in a statement.
Breathable Foods Inc., which makes AeroShot in France, says the product is different from the potent beverages. The company says that it?s not targeting anyone under 18 and that AeroShot safely delivers caffeine into the mouth, just like coffee does.
A single unit costs $2.99 at convenience stores, mom-and-pops, and liquor and online stores. The product packaging warns people not to consume more than three AeroShots a day.

To understand chromosome reshuffling, look to the genome's 3-D structure
ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? That our chromosomes can break and reshuffle pieces of themselves is nothing new; scientists have recognized this for decades, especially in cancer cells. The rules for where chromosomes are likely to break and how the broken pieces come together are only just now starting to come into view. Researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and the Immune Disease Institute (IDI) have helped bring those rules into clearer focus by discovering that where each of the genome's thousands of genes lie within the cell's nucleus -- essentially, the genome's three-dimensional organization -- holds great influence over where broken chromosome ends rejoin. This knowledge could shed light on fundamental processes related to cancer and normal cellular functions -- for example, in immunity.
The study team, led by Frederick Alt, PhD, director of the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston and the IDI; and Job Dekker, PhD, co-director of the Program in Systems Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, reported their results online on February 16 in the journal Cell.
In cancer cells, the process of chromosome rearrangement, or translocation -- marked by stretches of DNA physically breaking and swapping -- often results in the creation of new cancer-promoting "fusion" genes. Similarly, when a na?ve B cell starts to produce antibodies for the first time, it establishes its choice of target by breaking and recombining genes for antibody diversity.
"While chromosomal breaks and translocations are fundamental to many cancers, historically we've had no approaches to systematically study how they are generated," said Alt, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and the Charles A. Janeway Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. "About five years ago, our group set out to generate a high-throughput approach to address this important problem in cancer biology."
To accomplish this goal, the Alt lab developed high-throughput genome-wide translocation sequencing (HTGTS, which maps "hot spots" in the genome where chromosome breaks and translocations are more likely to occur) and at a level of resolution not previously thought possible. In early HTGTS studies, they found that broken chromosomes often rearrange within themselves, as opposed to sharing pieces across different chromosomes.
To probe these findings more deeply, his laboratory joined forces with Dekker's to combine HTGTS with a method called Hi-C. Developed by Dekker's group, Hi-C measures how all the sequences in the genome are organized relative to one another in three dimensions.
The combined data revealed several related but distinct principles of how genomic organization governs chromosome rearrangements. The first is based on the slight differences in how each cell organizes its genome compared to its neighbors (referred to as cellular spatial heterogeneity of genome organization). While the genome is organized in an average fashion that is largely common across all cells of a population, each individual cell harbors small deviations from that average. This latter property allows many genes to be physically close to each other in just a small subset of cells, even if they are not close to each other in the majority of cells.
The second principle involves proximity. If two broken chromosome strands lie in close proximity within the three-dimensional space of a given cell's nucleus, they are more likely to connect. This finding is of particular importance for translocations involving DNA sequences that do not break frequently, such those involved in translocations found in various non-lymphoid tumors.
The third principle applies the first two to DNA sequences that do break frequently (such as those that drive antibody gene rearrangements during B cell development). Such sequences tend to reshuffle with the same partner sequences in those subsets of cells where the partners lie physically close together, even if the partners do not within most cells. This can fuel recurrent translocations like those seen in many lymphoid tumors.
Together, the principles highlight the relationship between proximity, genomic organization, and break frequency. "Two sequences have to be broken and physically proximal to join," Alt explains. "If two sequences are together in most cells and frequently broken, they will translocate in many cells. If they are frequently together but one of them doesn't break, or if they both break frequently but always lie on opposite sides of the nucleus, the chances that they will translocate are very low or zero. However, if both sequences break very frequently and are close together in a subset of cells, they will very frequently translocate in that subset, contributing to recurrent translocations."
"Our finding that broken chromosome segments are more likely to join with other segments within the same chromosome, rather than other, more physically distant segments from other chromosomes, likely has great relevance to cancer genomes," Alt continued. "For example, cancer treatments that cause breaks may preferentially lead to intra-chromosomal rearrangements. It may also have relevance for 'chromothripsis,' a recently discovered phenomenon in many cancers in which the sequences of one chromosome become scrambled."
The new understanding of the roles of physical spatial proximity and overall three-dimensional genome structure in chromosomal translocations opens up new avenues for deciphering how the way a cell's nucleus is organized affects the genomic disarray found in cancer and other diseases characterized by chromosome reshuffling. The study also shows the power of combining two high-throughput genomic assays -- Hi-C and HGTGS -- for studying how the organizational plan within the nucleus influences fundamental biological processes.
"We feel that our findings and the application of our approaches will provide a new lens through which to view the genomes of many different types of cancer," Alt concluded.

I?ve just come home from my best friend?s baby shower for her first baby. She?ll be having a baby boy in March. She is incredibly excited and I am thrilled for her.
It was a tough shower to be at, and tough for more reasons than being in a room celebrating something that I want so badly for myself. My excitement and happiness for my friend is genuine. It?s just really hard not to go to envious places in my head. It?s not about the shower (I don?t even want a shower for when I?m pregnant); it?s about the baby.
Baby aside, the other issue was that one of the guests was the mother of my high school sweetheart. I dated this boy from age 15-18. We fooled around for another good three years after that. Yes, I was straight for 22 years. I?ve identified as gay for only a decade.
When people come out, many do so having known for years and years and years that they were gay, and if they didn?t, they at least had an idea that something about them was different. Not me. The possibility that I was gay did not even pass through my mind until my early twenties (which is too bad, because I had almost already finished college at that point). I liked boys. A lot. And a lot of them. Some might say I tried really, really hard at being straight. Or some might have called me promiscuous. Either way, I certainly wasn?t gay.
My mental illness was at its worst between the ages of 17 and 21. When I was 22, I started to get a bit better. And by ?better? I mean that I was let out of the psych ward where I lived for three years. Shortly after my worst, I fell in love with a girl, and then shortly after that, I started to come out to those in my life.
The unfortunate thing about the succession of these milestones was that many people I knew thought that because I was healthier after I came out of the closet, I must have been depressed because I was questioning my sexuality. That I couldn?t handle my shit because I was a closeted lesbian. That it would all get better now that I knew who I was.
Man, if that?s ?all? it was, I would be laughing. (Please note that I am not trying to diminish the pain that goes along with dealing with sexuality issues; I know a lot of people have a very hard time with it.) But I was paranoid and psychotic. I was a cutter and suicidal. I lived in black tar for year after year, with a treatment-resistant illness that should have killed me. So when people suggest I was ?just struggling with my sexuality,? I want to smack them upside the head. I feel that it totally disregards the pain of what I went through.
I don?t know when and how my ex-boyfriend?s mom found out about my sexuality, but we certainly have not spoken since. We had a relatively awkward conversation about her son and she told me about his pregnant wife and their 17-month-old baby and his house in the city and his business. As she was speaking, I flashed back to the days where I used to dream about being this guy?s wife and having two of his babies and a house in the city, supporting his business and being blissfully happy. For a split second, I thought of how easy that would be ? living the straight person?s dream ? and then I realized how miserable I would be (and also recognized that my ex-boyfriend?s life is probably not always that dreamy, and well aware that straight people have their problems too).
I have a wife. We live in an apartment outside of the city. We have decent jobs that keep us afloat and secure. And although this baby-making business is stressful and expensive and trying, I wouldn?t have it any other way. I love my wife and can?t imagine what life would be like without her in it. With the exception of having unlimited access to free sperm, there is nothing about being straight that I long for, or miss.
When she was done talking about her son, my ex-boyfriend?s mother turned to me and asked, ?So how are you??
I smiled, and answered genuinely, ?I am incredibly happy.?

US says it's monitoring Hezbollah activities (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (neh-pahl-ih-TAN'-oh) says the U.S. is closely monitoring the activities of Iran-linked militant group Hezbollah (hez-BUH'-lah).
Napolitano told lawmakers Wednesday that the Homeland Security Department has contacted Jewish organizations around the country and is working with the FBI and other law enforcement and intelligence agencies. She said there is no specific or credible threat against any organization or target in the United States, which considers Hezbollah a terrorist group.
Iran has been accused of launching a series of attacks against Israeli interests this week in Thailand, Georgia and India. Hezbollah is closely allied with Iran. The Defense Department estimates that Hezbollah receives between $100 million and $200 million a year in funding from Iran.
Napolitano said the threat from Hezbollah remains a "critical situation worth watching."

More than 300 killed in Honduras prison fire (AP)
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras ? Trapped inmates screamed from their cells as a fire swept through a Honduran prison, killing at least 300 inmates, authorities said Wednesday.
Some 475 people escaped from the prison in the town of Comayagua and 356 are missing and presumed dead, said Hector Ivan Mejia, a spokesman for the Honduras Security Ministry. He said 21 people had been injured.
Dozens were trapped behind bars as prison authorities tried to find the keys, officials said.
Outraged relatives of dead inmates tried to storm the gates of the prison Wednesday morning to recover the remains of their loves ones, witnesses told The Associated Press. The crowds were driven back by police officers firing tear gas.
Channel 5 television showed dozens of inmates' relatives hurling rocks at officers.
"We want to see the body," said Juan Martinez, whose son was reported dead. "We'll be here until we get to do that."
Comayagua fire department spokesman Josue Garcia said he saw "horrific" scenes while trying to put out the fire, saying inmates rioted in attempts to escape. He said "some 100 prisoners were burned to death or suffocated in their cells."
"We couldn't get them out because we didn't have the keys and couldn't find the guards who had them," Garcia said.
Officials are investigating whether the fire was triggered by rioting prisoners or by an electrical short-circuit, said Danilo Orellana, head of the national prison system.
A prisoner identified as Silverio Aguilar told HRN Radio that someone started screaming, "Fire! fire!" and the prisoners called for help.
"For a while, nobody listened. But after a few minutes, which seemed like an eternity, a guard appeared with keys and let us out," he said.
Hundreds of relatives rushed to Santa Teresa Hospital in Comayagua state to learn the fate of their loved ones, said Leonel Silva, fire chief in Comayagua, a town 90 miles (140 kilometers) north of the Central American country's capital, Tegucigalpa.
Lucy Marder, chief of forensic medicine for the prosecutor's office, said 12 victims were treated there and nine more in the Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, bringing the total of injured to 21. "That's why we think the death toll will rise," she said.
Marder said it would take at least three months to identify victims, some burned beyond recognition, because DNA tests will be required.
President Porfirio Lobo declared an emergency in July 2010 in nine of the 24 prisons in Honduras. His security minister at the time called the prisons "universities of crime" that had been overwhelmed by overcrowding.

With so many questions surrounding Chris Brown's controversial return to the Grammys, the F.A.M.E. singer simply let his feet do the talking. It was 2009 when Brown assaulted ex-girlfriend Rihanna a night before both were scheduled to appear at the 51st Grammy Awards. Sunday night (February 12), however, it was all about the music.
Fans may not have recognized the intro beat to "Turn Up the Music," Brown's first single from his upcoming fifth album, Fortune, but they're sure to be humming the tune tomorrow following Chris' colorful performance at Sunday's show.
When the stage lit up, Brown stood atop a collection of colorful blocks that at times resembled the 1980s arcade game "Q-Bert." The electric-tuned, Underdogs-produced single filled Staples Center, as Brown, who was dressed in a white and gray varsity jacket, white pants and sparkling sneaks, kick-stepped up and down multiple levels of the high-rising stage prop.
As the beat built, the blocks went from red to blue to yellow and green with building intensity before Brown switched gears and went into the more familiar dance single "Beautiful People" from last year's F.A.M.E. LP. The pop star got a bit daring, jumping across the structure while his backup dancers, who wore oversize winged ponchos, followed suit in a high-flying routine.
In the end, there were no innuendos or screen cuts to Breezy's ex-flame Rihanna. Brown simply finished his number, stood triumphantly and saluted the crowd before taking a bow.

In Maine, Paul vies to extend Romney losing streak (AP)
SANFORD, Maine ? Mitt Romney hoped to avoid a fourth straight election setback Saturday in the GOP presidential nomination race, but feisty Ron Paul could extend that losing streak with a victory in Maine's caucuses.
Romney, the one-time front-runner, stepped up efforts to court Republicans in recent days, reflecting growing concern about the outcome of what has become a two-man race in Maine.
Neither Newt Gingrich nor Rick Santorum, who won in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado on Tuesday, is actively competing in Maine, where party officials planned to declare a winner Saturday evening.
Paul was optimistic as he greeted morning caucus-goers in Sanford, where a few hundred Republicans gathered in a nearly-filled high school gymnasium.
"I think we have a very good chance," Paul said. Romney will "be better off if he wins it and I'm going to be a lot better off if I win. So this will give me momentum and it will just maintain his. It's a pretty important state as far as I'm concerned."
Romney wants Maine voters to help in his struggle to convince his party's conservative wing that he should be the candidate they back. The former Massachusetts governor said in a Washington speech Friday that he was "a severely conservative Republican governor."
He echoed that message in Sanford minutes after Paul left, and later in the day at a crowded Portland caucus.
"In my home with my mom and dad I learned conservative values," Romney said. "I want to ask you and the people of Maine for your vote. If I get your vote, it'll help me become our nominee. If I become our nominee, I'm going to beat this guy and bring America back."
Paul, a libertarian-minded Texas congressman, is fighting to prove he's capable of winning at all, particularly in a state where his campaign has focused considerable attention. He has scored a few top three finishes in other early voting states, but his strategy is based on winning some of the smaller caucus contests where his passionate base of support can have an oversized impact.
Paul suggested his candidacy was at a critical juncture. Asked whether he would stay in the contest until the GOP's national convention in August, he answered: "I'm going to stay in as long as I'm in the race. And right now I'm in the race."
There is no reliable polling to gauge the state of the Maine election, which drew fewer than 5,500 voters from across the state four years ago. But Romney's recent activities suggest a victory is by no means assured, despite the natural advantages of being a former New England governor competing in a state he won with more than 50 percent of the vote four years ago.
He changed his schedule Friday night to add personal appearances at two caucuses Saturday; he had planned to take the day off.
Romney faced a rowdy crowd at a town hall-style meeting in Portland Friday night, where one heckler was removed by police. Others asked pointed questions about his off-shore bank accounts, feelings about the nation's poor, and his continued support for the natural gas extraction process known as fracking.
On Saturday morning, he suggested that he's the only one in the race who isn't a Washington insider.
"I have never spent a day in Washington working," Romney said. "I expect to go there, get it fixed, and then go home. I'm not going to stay in Washington."
Some crowd members chanted, "Ron Paul," as Romney left the crowded gymnasium.
Maine's nonbinding presidential straw poll, which began Feb. 4, has drawn virtually none of the hype surrounding recent elections in Florida and Nevada, where candidates poured millions of dollars into television and radio advertising.
Romney and his allies spent a combined $15.9 million in Florida. But his campaign had placed only a small cable television ad buy airing Friday and Saturday, at a cost of several thousand dollars. But he sent surrogates to the state in recent days and hosted a telephone town hall in addition to Friday's campaign stop.
Maine's caucuses are spread over a week.
The state party will announce a winner Saturday evening, although a few contests will be held Sunday. Washington County, in the state's far eastern region, postponed its caucuses until Feb. 18 because of a snow storm, disappointing some participants.
Helen Saccone, who's from Lubec, said she understands that weather could create problems, but that those who wanted to caucus should have had the chance. "It's Maine. Life goes on when it snows in Maine," she said.
The rural region is likely stronger territory for Paul, who has been more active than Romney in the state.
Paul did reasonably well in Maine four years ago, earning more than 18 percent of the vote, and his support has grown since then in a state whose electorate isn't afraid to support candidates outside the mainstream.
The tea party, hardly a Romney ally, has exerted significant influence, taking over the GOP platform and helping to elect Gov. Paul LePage.
"Paul needs to show he can win somewhere," GOP strategist Phil Musser said. "My sense is a win in Maine for Romney would be nice. But to be honest, Ron Paul is camped out up there and he needs to win one."
The timing of the contest also raises the stakes.
The narrative coming out of Maine will likely reverberate in the political echo chamber for weeks, given there isn't another election until Arizona and Michigan host their contests Feb. 28. Romney hopes that narrative will be more positive than it has been over the last week, arguably his worst of the year.
