Bahrain riot police clear protesters with tear gas (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Riot police in Bahrain fired tear gas Friday to disperse several hundred protesters among thousands who took to the streets Friday to demand the government's resignation after a fact-finding report uncovered torture and other abuses against detainees.

The protesters carried the Bahraini flag as they marched for nearly four miles (six kilometers) along a highway through Shiite neighborhoods in a northern district of the island kingdom. After the march, several hundred protesters gathered at a traffic circle, prompting police to seal off the road and release clouds of tear gas.

Bahrain's Shiites, about 70 percent of the nation's 525,000 citizens, complain of widespread discrimination under the kingdom's Sunni rulers, including being blocked from top government or military posts. The monarchy has offered some concessions but refused to bow to demands for greater political freedoms and rights.

Activists accuse the government of failing to implement the recommendations of a fact-finding mission it authorized. The mission's 500-page report, released in November, found a number of detainees were tortured as "a deliberate practice by some" during the height of the protests in February and March.

"No change has happened," said Fatima Ahmad, a 24-year-old protester. "All the officers and people who were involved in the violation of human rights were awarded different posts and positions. The government is fooling its own nation and that is why it must resign."

The report on the crackdown was also highly critical of a special security court created under martial law that issued harsh penalties, including death sentences, and "denied most defendants elementary fair trial guarantees."

Bahrain lifted martial law in June and dissolved the security court.

The report urged Bahrain to review all the security court verdicts and drop charges against those accused of nonviolent acts such as joining or supporting the protests.

Five Shiite opposition groups, including the country's largest, Al Wefaq, said in a statement Friday that the government has no intention of taking steps recommended by the report.

"The regime has demonstrated a lack of seriousness for carrying out (the) recommendations," it said.

Marchers on Friday called for the release of political prisoners, some of whom were tried by the special security court, and for the trials of police officers believed to be behind the killings of more than 35 protesters since anti-government protests began 10 months ago.

On Thursday, the country's Information Affairs Authority said five police officers will be put on trial in connection with the alleged torture of a detainee who later died in custody.

Student Mohammed Ali said the current government has no credibility and must resign.

The protesters, though, have not called for the downfall of the Sunni-led monarchy, which reshuffled the government this year under pressure from activists.

Early Friday, the Interior Ministry said police arrested 80 people in the eastern village of Nuwaidrat who allegedly attacked a police patrol with fire bombs.

Shed remnants of your relationship with Never liked it anyway (Digital Trends)

neverlikeditanywayAside from the actual breaking up part, what to do with the leftovers is arguably the worst part of ending a relationship. The tangible remnants of the relationship are everywhere, and they come in the form of sweatshirts, earrings, iPods, video games, you name it. Those odds and ends stick around after it?s all over and while others see them as shiny new toys, you don?t quite share the sentiment.

A new startup wants to save these mementos from a backyard bonfire. Never liked it anyway is an eBay for break-ups, where you can purge yourself of these items with a little catharsis on the side. Reselling jewelry from these sort of disasters has become a popular business (like Out of your life, which will actually send you a ?break-up box? for the process), but what about all the other things that get left behind?

Buyers also benefit: a Mac case is half-priced on the site, with a note explaining that the seller?s boyfriend ?was never a good listener. Which probably explains why he bought me a Mac Air case? not only did I not have a Mac, I didn?t even have a computer yet.?

The site relies on humor and heartstrings more than ease of use. The buying process is less technical than Amazon and eBay addicts will like, as it begins by merely messaging the seller to set up the deal via PayPal. And the inventory is lacking at the moment. But the stories of failed relationships are where the intrigue lies, and also what leads to some serious under-pricing.

Still, Never liked it anyway is skewed in favor of the lovelorn. In addition to clearing out some space, you get to gripe about your ex?something that won?t help your sale over at Craigslist, but definitely will here. You even rate your recovery since the breakup, which include a bevy of emotions like ?What break up?? and ?Getting drunk too often.??

"Bambi", "Silence of the Lambs" among U.S. film treasures (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The U.S. National Film Registry on Wednesday named 25 films to be preserved as cultural treasures ranging from the 1942 Walt Disney classic, "Bambi," to the 1991 psychological thriller "The Silence of the Lambs."

The film list also includes the Academy Award-winning "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks and the post-war noir film "The Big Heat," set in a fictional US town that examined domestic life in the 1950s. It includes Hollywood features, documentaries and animation, spanning the period 1912 to 1994.

The latest films were selected from 2,228 films nominated by the public, bringing the total number of films in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress to 575.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," said Librarian of Congress James Billington in a statement.

Independent filmmaking pioneer director and writer John Cassavetes' "Faces," (1968) that criticized middle class America was selected along with "I, an Actress" (1977) by low-budget filmmaker George Kuchar whose outlandish sensibilities inspired other directors such as John Waters.

Early films included "The Cry of the Children," and "A Cure for Pokeritis," -- both from 1912 -- as well as Charlie Chaplin's first feature, the silent classic, "The Kid" (1921).

"Stand and Deliver" (1988), directed by Cuban-born Ramon Menendez, highlighted the 1980s wave of films by Latino filmmakers, and "Hester Street" (1975), shot in black and white and partly in Yiddish, showed Eastern European Jewish life in the United States that was initially shunned by Hollywood.

Other films included Billy Wilder's drama about alcoholism, "The Lost Weekend" (1945), John Ford's 1924 western "The Iron Horse," and "Norma Rae" (1979) which starred Sally Field as an unlikely single mother activist trying to improve work conditions.

Composer George Gershwin "Porgy and Bess" (1959) marked the rise of the civil rights movement as some black actors turned down roles and "The Negro Soldier" (1944) showcased the heroism of black soldiers and became mandatory viewing for all soldiers.

Animations included a one-minute film by Pixar Animation Studios' co-founder Ed Catmull, "A Computer Animated Hand" (1972) that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation. Documentaries included "Growing up Female" that gave a portrait of the US women's liberation movement in the early 1970s.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 50,000 app-submission milestone

Just over one month after crossing the 40,000 app-submission threshold, Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace has hit another milestone: 50,000. According to analyses done by All About Windows Phone, the Taj Mahal of tiles has seen developers submit just over 50,000 applications for review -- 42,655 of which are currently available in the United States. What may be more telling is the rate at which developers are submitting their wares. Over 17,000 apps have been submitted to the Marketplace in the last 90-days from over 13,000 different publishers (an average of 265 per day). With Apple's iOS App Store and Google's Android Market sitting firmly atop the mobile-app-ecosystem totem pole, Microsoft is looking to close the gap and put distance between itself and Research In Motion's BlackBerry App World. Hopefully, the gang from Redmond can keep the positive momentum going through 2012... even with its next major mobile OS revision being a minor one.

Demi Lovato Slams Disney For Eating Disorder Joke On 'Shake It Up'

Demi Lovato is not impressed with Disney, and she's letting them know it. The singer and former star of "Sonny With A Chance" is furious over a joke about eating disorders on Disney Channel's "Shake It Up."

Lovato entered treatment for eating disorders and cutting in October 2010, and she isn't laughing at a character who quipped, "I could just eat you up, well if I ate."

On Friday night the 19-year-old launched into a series of tweets expressing her distaste at the 'joke', writing:

Lovato added, "And is it just me or are the actress' [on Disney Channel] getting THINNER AND THINNER.... I miss the days of RAVEN and LIZZIE MCGUIRE," referencing actresses Raven Symone and Hilary Duff -- who have both dealt with public pressure to lose weight.

Lovato finished up her rant to Disney with a straightforward tweet, telling her former employer:

Lovato has been open about her battle with bulimia and even recently returned to Timberline Knolls --the Illinois treatment center where she sought help last year -- to speak to the center's current patients.

Since she left rehab in January 2011, Lovato hasn't hesitated to defend herself from those who feel it necessary to comment on her weight. In August, Lovato's weight became a trending topic on Twitter and she responded to haters by pointing out, "I've gained weight. Get over it. That's what happens when you get out of treatment for AN EATING DISORDER."

With Lovato's tweets reaching more than five million Twitter followers, we have to wonder if Disney will pay attention to her message.

Kudos to Demi for speaking up, since eating disorders are rampant in Hollywood:

In 2005, actress Jessica Alba told Glamour, "A lot of girls have eating disorders, and I did too. I got obsessed with it. When I went from a girl's body to a woman's body with natural fat in places, I freaked out. It makes you feel weird, like you're not ready for that body."

Can I cancel Windows XP updates in progress?

I'm sitting at an airport between flights and for some reason I chose now to give in to my netbook nagging me to install updates. I chose "Turn off and install updates". Turns out there are 96 :P. Its been half an hour and its on update 15. I've got a few hours yet but this isn't looking good. All I've got is a blue screen telling me not to turn it off. Is there any way to cancel this?

Iraq: Explosions Rock Baghdad, Killing At Least 18 And Injuring Dozens

BAGHDAD ? The spokesman for the Iraqi health ministry says that at least 49 people have been killed in a wave of violence across the city.

Ziad Tariq says at least 167 people were also wounded in the attacks that struck Baghdad on Thursday morning.

The wave of attacks is the worst to hit Baghdad in months. It targeted neighborhoods around the city in an apparently coordinated campaign of violence designed to wreak havoc.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A series of blasts Thursday morning in Baghdad killed at least 23 people and injured dozens more in a coordinated attack designed to wreak havoc across the Iraqi capital.

The blasts were the worst violence to hit the country since a political crisis between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite factions erupted this weekend. The political spat, which pits Iraq's Shiite prime minister against the highest-ranking Sunni political leader, has raised fears that Iraq's sectarian wounds will be reopened.

Iraqi officials said at least 12 blasts went off early Thursday morning in nine neighborhoods around the city. The violence ranged from sticky bombs attached to cars to roadside bombs and vehicles packed with explosives.

Most of the violence appeared to hit Shiite neighborhoods although some Sunni areas were also targeted.

The worst attack was in the al-Amal neighborhood where seven people were killed in a blast that appeared to target rescuers and officials who came to the scene after a previous explosion. At least four people were killed in one western Baghdad neighborhood when two roadside bombs exploded.

All the information came from police and hospital officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

In the southwestern neighborhood of Karrada, where one of the victims was killed, sirens could be heard as ambulances rushed to the scene and a large plume of smoke rose over the explosion site.

"My baby was sleeping in her bed. Shards of glass have fallen on our heads. Her father hugged her and carried her. She is now scared in the next room," said one woman in western Baghdad who identified herself as Um Hanin. "All countries are stable. Why don't we have security and stability?"

While Baghdad and Iraq have gotten much safer over the years, explosions like Thursday's are still commonplace. They come at a precarious time in Iraq's political history, just days after American troops pulled out of Iraq.

The government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has accused the Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi of running a hit squad that targeted government officials. Al-Maliki is also pushing for a vote of no-confidence against another Sunni politician, the deputy prime minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

Many Sunnis fear that this is part of a wider campaign to go after Sunni political figures in general and shore up Shiite control across the country at a critical time when all American troops have left Iraq.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the morning's violence. But the coordinated nature of the assault and the fact that the attacks took place in numerous neighborhoods suggested a planning capability only available to al-Qaida in Iraq.

Many of the neighborhoods were also Shiite areas which are a favorite target of al-Qaida. The Sunni extremist group often targets Shiites who they believe are not true Muslims.

Al-Qaida in Iraq is severely debilitated from its previous strength in the early years of the war, but is still able to launch coordinated and deadly assaults from time to time.

U.S. military officials have said they're worried about a resurgence of al-Qaida after the American military leaves the country. If that happens, it could lead Shiite militants to fight back and attack Sunni targets, thus sending Iraq back to the sectarian violence it experienced just a few years ago.

14 essential stops in Stieg Larsson's Stockholm

NIKLAS LARSSON / AP

Tour guide Eva Palmqvist, right, points out locations in late crime novelist Stieg Larsson's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" on the island of Sodermalm as Tom Arrison, left, Laura Larson, second from left, and Edwin Schwander listen in June 16, 2010, in Stockholm.

By By Mary Anne Evans, Frommers.com

Millennium fever has hit Stockholm big time, and the whole world, it seems, wants to see where the characters of Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander, created by author Stieg Larsson, played out their particular drama. Take a walk around the streets, bars, and cafes of the Millennium trilogy books and films for a different view of gritty S?dermalm.

Related: 6 destinations for book lovers

Guided Millennium tours
Guided Millennium tours take place in English on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. from May through the summer. Winter walks in English leave on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. Tickets cost 120 SEK. Book at the Stadsmuseum, Slussen, tel. 08-508 31 600; www.stadsmuseum.stockholm.se, or at the Stockholm Tourist Center, Vasagatan 14 or online at www.ticnet.se. The walk starts at Bellmansgatan 1 and takes between 11/2 and 2 hours. For a private tour tel. 08-508 316 59 or e-mail bokning.stadsmuseum@stockholm.se.

Stockholms Stadsmuseum
What better place to start than with the film set of the Millennium editorial office? It should get you in the mood. Buy the official map of the Millennium tour?at the?Stockholm City Museum?(40 SEK).

Bellsmansgatan 1
Now one of Stockholm's most famous addresses, this is where Blomkvist lived in an attic apartment. It's a Gothic fantasy of a building with a private bridge and wonderful views. The real entrance is at street level, but the entrance at the walkway depicted in the film is much more picturesque. Public transport: T-bana: Slussen. Bus: 43, 55.

Monteliusv?gen
Take in the view, but also look over to Kungsholmen island and the R?dhuset with its light brown tower and green roof. This is the courthouse where Blomkvist is convicted of slander against Hans-Erik Wennerstr?m and it all kicks off.

Tabbouli
It's better known to Larsson aficionados as Samir's Cauldron, the Bosnian restaurant where the famous shoot-out takes place. It's shut during the day, but you might want to come back here for a thoroughly satisfying meze in the garden in the evening, without the guns. Details: Tavastagatan 22. tel. 08-429 82 55; www.tabbouli.eu.

Lundabron
It's not particularly attractive, nor is it meant to be. The Lunda bridge is between Blomkvist's apartment and Salander's, which was in an old building with no comforts. Most of these tenements were swept away in the 1970s when new apartments were built for the inhabitants, with running water and inside toilets. The bridge spans one of the places deliberately blown apart by dynamite in the 1880s (Nobel's great invention).

Mellqvist Coffee Bar
One of the most important places in the books where Blomkvist takes his various women. Larsson himself used it extensively when working at Expo's editorial offices in the same building and could be seen tapping away at his laptop. Despite the fame, it's friendly, laidback, and local with an outside terrace for winter and summer. Details: Hornsgatan 78. Small latte 30 SEK.

Synagogue
Walk through Mariatorget, also used in the Swedish film, along St. Paulsgaten to the discreet building that is the Adat Jisrael Synagogue, one of Stockholm's oldest Orthodox synagogues set in an 18th-century building. Jewish Inspector Bublanski is a regular worshipper and meets with Dragan Armansky, CEO of Milton Security, here. St. Paulsgatan 13

Millennium's Editorial Offices
This must be one of Stockholm's most photographed buildings. It's where Millennium has its editorial office, located above what was once Greenpeace's. Corner of G?tgatan and H?kens Gata.

7-Eleven
Go in and buy a package of Billy's Pan Pizza and you must be the ... well, 1,000th, 5,000th? visitor to do this. It has to be keeping Billy in business. This is where Salander shops after buying her fantastic new apartment.

Mosebacke
The square was already pretty famous due to the Mosebacke theater, but it took Salander to bring the Nils Sj?gren statue of The Sisters to general notice. It was inspired by the suicide of two girls in Hammarby Lake in the early 1900s. The official story is that they were in love with the same man; the more likely one was that they were in love with each other -- of course, thoroughly impossible at the time.

S?dra Teatern
This is a wonderful bar and the place where Salander and her lawyer, Blomkvist's sister Giannini, have a beer at the end when all the drama is over. But was it? As Larsson intended many more books, it could have been the beginning of something ... Have another beer and speculate. Details: Mosebacke torg 13. tel. 08-531 99 400; www.sodrateatern.com. Beer from 65 SEK.

Kvarnen
A lot happens at Kvarnen with Salander and the girls' rock band Evil Fingers, and it's also where Lisbeth kisses Miriam Wu. Pretty well anything goes here. Details: Tjarhovsgatan 4. tel. 08-64303 80; www.kvarnen.com. Beer from 63 SEK.

Sandhamn
Hard-core fans can take the boat out into the archipelago to Sandhamn, where Blomkvist goes to escape the city. But his summer cottage is not marked, so go for the atmosphere and a good day out. Cinderella boats leave from Strandv?gen from mid-Apr to mid-June; www.cindarellabatarna.com. For information on Sandhamn: www.sandhamn.com.

EC antitrust officials not swayed by NYSE-Deutsche Boerse (Reuters)

FRANKFURT/NEW YORK (Reuters) ? European Commission antitrust officials on Wednesday showed no sign of being swayed by Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext's last-ditch arguments to save their $9 billion deal, sources said, making it increasingly likely the exchange operators will have to take their campaign directly to the commissioners.

A meeting with members of the EC antitrust case team was factual and cordial, two people familiar with the meeting said, but executives and regulatory officials appeared to remain at loggerheads over their views about the derivatives market.

Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext will now likely center their lobbying efforts on bypassing the views of the antitrust case team, to focus on antitrust commissioner Joaquin Almunia himself, or on the so-called college of 27 commissioners, these people said.

The exchanges are likely to make a case for why their deal to create a pan-European exchange operator -- and the world's largest -- would be good for the European Union at a time when the continent is dealing with a deep crisis.

"There are big stakes for Europe here at a time when Europe's problems are front and center but no one is paying attention to this deal," one of the sources said.

The latest meeting between executives and regulators follows weeks of terse negotiations during which European Union staff made clear their reservations about approving a combination of Deutsche Boerse's Eurex and NYSE Euronext's Liffe on concerns the merged entity will have a monopoly over European listed derivatives trading.

Both Boerse and NYSE Euronext have said they will not pursue the merger if they are asked to divest either Eurex or Liffe. A formal decision by the European Commission is not expected until January or early February.

The exchanges have argued their control over the derivatives segment is much lower if the vast over-the-counter (OTC) market is included in the assessment of the global derivatives market.

But their merger plans were dealt a blow when the European Union decided to exclude OTC derivatives from its review of the merger.

In a bid to assuage regulatory concerns, Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext this week offered to cap fees on trading in their European derivatives contracts for three years, and to sell the entire single stock equity derivatives business of NYSE Euronext's Liffe unit.

The latest offer came after a first set of concessions made in November failed to address the European Commission's competition concerns while opponents have criticised the second batch of proposals offered last week as only incremental adjustments.

Deutsche Boerse and NYSE declined to comment. Antitrust officials could not be reached for comment late on Wednesday.

Mediterranean diet gives longer life, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? A Mediterranean diet with large amounts of vegetables and fish gives a longer life. This is the unanimous result of four studies to be published by the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Research studies ever since the 1950s have shown that a Mediterranean diet, based on a high consumption of fish and vegetables and a low consumption of animal-based products such as meat and milk, leads to better health.

Study on older people

Scientists at the Sahlgrenska Academy have now studied the effects of a Mediterranean diet on older people in Sweden. They have used a unique study known as the "H70 study" to compare 70-year-olds who eat a Mediterranean diet with others who have eaten more meat and animal products. The H70 study has studied thousands of 70-year-olds in the Gothenburg region for more than 40 years.

Chance of living longer

The results show that those who eat a Mediterranean diet have a 20% higher chance of living longer.

"This means in practice that older people who eat a Mediterranean diet live an estimated 2 3 years longer than those who don't," says Gianluca Tognon, scientist at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

Support from other studies

These results are supported by three further as yet unpublished studies into Mediterranean diets and their health effects: one carried out on people in Denmark, the second on people in northern Sweden, and the third on children.

"The conclusion we can draw from these studies is that there is no doubt that a Mediterranean diet is linked to better health, not only for the elderly but also for youngsters," says Gianluca Tognon.

Gianluca Tognon himself is from Italy, but moved to Sweden and Gothenburg specifically to collaborate with Lauren Lissner's research group at the Sahlgrenska Academy, and develop research into the Mediterranean diet.

Romney begins making closing argument to voters (AP)

BEDFORD, N.H. ? Sharpening his message ahead of voting in Iowa and New Hampshire, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney argued Tuesday that President Barack Obama is pushing to make the United States more like Europe.

In a speech Tuesday, the former businessman was expected to tell voters that he would turn the U.S. into an "opportunity society" while Obama's policies would create an "entitlement society" with more people dependent on government welfare.

Romney's message contrasts with the argument the Democratic president has started to articulate for his re-election, in which he calls for an economy that offers "fair play, a fair shot and a fair share."

The former Massachusetts governor is using the speech to open four straight days of campaigning in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first primary on Jan. 10. Romney must win New Hampshire if he hopes to become the Republican nominee.

Two weeks remain until voting begins Jan. 3 in Iowa, though Romney will focus on New Hampshire through Christmas in a sign of the state's importance to his political strategy.

Romney laid out his basic principles in an opinion piece published Tuesday in USA Today.

Murphy, police chief who urged restraint, dies (AP)

NEW YORK ? Patrick Murphy, a police reformer who urged officers to hold their fire as head of the New York, Detroit and Washington police during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s, has died at age 91.

Murphy died Friday of a heart attack at a hospital in Wilmington, N.C., his son, Gerard Murphy, said.

"Pat Murphy was the visionary embodiment of police reform," New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a written statement. "In the face of fierce opposition from entrenched police leadership nationally, he revolutionized policy to restrain the use of deadly force."

Murphy was born in Brooklyn and became a police patrolman after serving as a Navy pilot in World War II. He rose to become the top police official in Syracuse, N.Y., then Washington and Detroit.

In 1968, Murphy ordered police to use restraint in controlling the riots that wracked Washington following the killing of Martin Luther King Jr.

New York Mayor John Lindsay brought in Murphy in 1970 to lead the NYPD after corruption allegations rocked the police department.

In 1972, he instituted new rules restricting the use of deadly force to situations in which police needed to defend a life. He led the NYPD until the end of Lindsay's term in 1973.

Murphy later became a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and spent 12 years as president of the Police Foundation, an advocacy group. He also helped found the Police Executive Research Forum.

"Police chiefs across the nation recognize Patrick Murphy as an icon in the field of policing, and agree that he played a historic role in changing the landscape of policing for the better," the Police Executive Research Forum said Wednesday.

Murphy's survivors include his wife, Betty Murphy, and eight children.

Romney picks up SC gov's endorsement in GOP race (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney charged Friday into the final weeks before the leadoff Iowa caucuses, unshaken by Newt Gingrich, the race's leader, and trying to stem the former House speaker's rise in key states.

Romney campaigned in western Iowa, where he had delivered a steady debate performance the night before, stopping short of the attacks on Gingrich that had marked the former Massachusetts governor's campaign for the past week.

While Gingrich took a day off the campaign trail, Romney claimed a coveted endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a tea party darling. The state holds the first-in-the-South primary in late January and Gingrich, a former congressman from neighboring Georgia, has organized and campaign aggressively there.

Romney also began airing new ads in New Hampshire and South Carolina on a day that amounted to a show of force for him. He is targeting Gingrich in the top three states with less than three weeks to go before voting begins in Iowa on Jan. 3.

"Neither South Carolina nor the nation can afford four more years of President Obama, and Mitt Romney is the right person to take him on and get America back on track," Haley, a rising GOP star, said in a statement after announcing her endorsement on Fox News Channel.

She later told The Associated Press that Romney "has led in making decisions."

The two were to appear together in South Carolina on Friday and Saturday.

In the AP interview, Haley said the large GOP field has strengths and weaknesses.

"We don't have a perfect candidate," she said. She said she liked Romney's ability as governor to work with Democrat, business background and outlook on health care.

Haley's nod is somewhat rare because sitting governors of important primary states often remain neutral. Iowa's GOP Gov. Terry Branstad has said he does not plan to endorse a candidate. Branstad said Thursday that he wasn't sure Gingrich had the discipline to be president, but he also has criticized Romney for not campaigning all-out for the caucuses.

Romney has focused heavily on winning New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary on Jan. 10. But he has been spending more time in Iowa as Gingrich has risen in the polls, and has aired TV ads promoting his candidacy and distributed mailers attacking Gingrich.

"I need your help at the caucus," Romney told about 80 Republican activists and employees at a Sioux City steel company on Friday.

Romney's new ad in New Hampshire shows the former business executive talking to voters about their economic concerns. In the ad running in South Carolina, Romney touts his leadership and describes himself as "a man of steadiness and constancy."

Unlike his all-out but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to win the 2008 caucuses, Romney hopes a better-than-expected showing among Iowa conservatives could lift him going into New Hampshire.

But Romney is also looking increasingly beyond Iowa, advisers said.

Sensing a flattening in Gingrich's support, Romney stayed positive Friday and looked to step up his effort in South Carolina in hopes of disrupting Gingrich's plan.

That strategy poses risks for Romney, whose Mormon faith and changed positions on social issues gives some South Carolina GOP activists pause ? as in socially-conservative Iowa.

Romney's attacks on Gingrich's judgment and temperament over the past week, and the aggressive criticisms by GOP rivals Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, have cut into Gingrich's lead in Iowa in a way that could weaken him in next-up New Hampshire.

Taken together, it suggests slowing Gingrich's rise in Iowa could prevent him from going into South Carolina in a position of strength.

In Thursday's debate, Romney pivoted from the attacks he's been leveling against Gingrich and left it to others to pile on.

The fast-paced debate underscored the state of the race, with Gingrich leading in the polls nationally and in Iowa and his pursuers working on multiple fronts to overtake him.

The candidates ? except for Gingrich ? were making final pitches to voters on Friday before people begin focusing on the holidays.

Rep. Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry were taking their argument that Gingrich isn't conservative enough to lead the party to Iowa voters on separate bus tours.

"I am the only consistent, constitutional conservative," Bachmann said, beginning a bus tour through Iowa's 99 counties. "I'm not a convenient conservative."

She predicted the retail campaigning she's doing on the bus tour would help her do well in Iowa and that would "be a cannon shot into South Carolina."

Although Gingrich was off the trail, his campaign drew unwanted attention after two New Hampshire Republicans alleged in complaints filed with state authorities that they had received illegal political telephone calls from the Gingrich operation.

New Hampshire law prevents political campaigns from using pre-recorded political messages, or "robo-calls," to contact residents on a national do-not-call list.

Gingrich's campaign denied wrongdoing.

Haley's endorsement, meanwhile, could help Romney in her state, which is third in line to pass judgment on the GOP field. How much it could help, however, is unknown.

Governors can use their statewide political networks to help presidential candidates. But polls show Haley is not as popular as she was following her November 2010 election.

Even so, she remains a favorite of tea party activists whose energy helped Republicans win across the country last fall. Their enthusiasm will be critical in helping the GOP presidential nominee next year, but Romney has struggled to court them.

South Carolina is a difficult state for Romney. He competed aggressively there during his first presidential run in 2008 only to bail out shortly before the primary. He had failed to ease voter concerns about his faith and reversals on social issues.

Haley's ties with Romney run deep.

She endorsed him in 2008 when she was in the legislature. Romney returned the favor when she ran for governor in 2010, a year when the tea party wielded big clout in key races across the country, including hers.

Wonder Woman Checks Breasts for Cancer | Care2 Causes

Wonder Woman?s breasts are a real attention-getter, that?s for sure. That?s one way to promote breast cancer awareness. Throw in Catwoman, She-Hulk, and Storm, and you?re bound to get people talking.

That?s the intention of a breast cancer awareness campaign launched in Mozambique. If these powerful heroines take breast cancer seriously, you should, too.

The ads read:

?Nobody?s immune to breast cancer. When we talk about breast cancer, there?s no women or superwomen. Everybody has to do the self-examination monthly. Fight with us against the enemy and, when in doubt, talk with your doctor.?

That?s a good message. Know your breasts. Check your breasts. When in doubt, call your doctor.

When you?re trying to educate people about a health issue, getting their attention in the first place is the hardest part. This campaign is already generating conversation.

?There is some controversy in the medical world about the value of breast self-exams. Even if it?s not the best way to detect cancer (mammography or thermography can ?see? more than your hand, and many if not most lumps that can be felt are benign), I think more awareness and more data is generally a good thing. Even for superheroes.? ? Xeni Jardin on Boing Boing

??maybe Susan G. Komen for the Cure or another women?s health organization should see if Marvel and DC would be willing to collaborate on similar campaign in the United States. It seems like there could be some real mutual messaging there: women as supeheroines, superheroines as accessible women? ? Alyssa Rosenberg on ThinkProgress

Some people find it a bit?well, uncartoony, even if they see the potential value in it.

?There?s just something about the cartoons we grew up with doing not so cartoony things, like being aware of their flawless, semi-pornographic breasts. The very same breasts that never seemed to bounce or topple out of their bodices while leaping from building to building.

?Without question, this ad will grab the attention of a younger demographic that might not have paid attention to breast cancer campaigns in the past. How many of those people are comic fanboys who?ve blown up the photo for their bedroom wall? I don?t want to know.? ? Piper Weiss on Shine

So what do you think? Are superhero comic figures a good way to get women ? particularly younger women ? to pay attention to the warning signs of breast cancer? Please take a moment to comment below.

You can see the images of She-Hulk, Catwoman, and Storm on the next page.

'To be Artist of the Year, a whole 365 days, that's pretty cool,' she says in a video acceptance speech.

Katy Perry was everywhere in 2011, and thanks to that pop-culture takeover, she was named MTV's Artist of the Year.

The honor is the culmination of an insanely busy year for Perry, but she still found a few minutes to send a big "thank you" to everyone for her incredible success over the past 12 months. "Hi everyone at MTV! I just want to say thank you for this amazing award," she said in a video message. "To be Artist of the Year, a whole 365 days, that's pretty cool."

Perry beat out fellow superstars Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Lil Wayne during our Best Artists of 2011 debate, which makes the win that much more unbelievable for the pink-haired singer.

"I wasn't really allowed to watch MTV growing up, so this feels really validating," she said. "And I've had a fantastic year, a great tour and a great run, and you guys have been so a part of it and such a big reason why. So thank you so much. I really appreciate it."

Perry was all over the radio in 2011, thanks to hit singles like "E.T.," "The One That Got Away" and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." She appeared on the big screen in "The Smurfs" and the small screen hosting "Saturday Night Live." She hit the road for her California Dreams Tour, kept us captivated with videos like the VMA-winning "Firework" and "E.T." and always had us talking, whether it was about what she was wearing, tweeting or saying. And, oh yeah, "Firework," also happens to be MTV's #10 Song of the Year.

As 2011 comes to an end, Perry will kick off the new year with Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Firework."

Stick with MTV as we count down the Best of 2011, including the top Artists, Songs, Live Performances and EDM Artists of the year.

NCAA puts athlete stipend on hold

(AP) ? The NCAA is putting its $2,000 stipend on hold.

The governing body said Thursday the number of schools seeking an override had reached 125 ? the necessary number to suspend the rule until it can be reconsidered by the Division I Board of Directors at January's NCAA convention.

The board passed legislation in October to give some athletes an additional $2,000 toward the full cost-of-tuition, money that would go beyond tuition, room and board, books and fees. Some schools have expressed opposition because they believe it violates the NCAA's philosophy on amateur sports. But most are concerned about compliance with Title IX rules requiring schools to treat men's and women's sports equally, or the budget hit athletic departments will face with incoming recruits next fall.

NCAA President Mark Emmert says he believes the concerns can be addressed.

The board has three options when it meets: Rescind the stipend and operate under previous NCAA rules, modify the rule or create a new proposal that would go back to the schools for another 60-day comment period, or allow members to vote on the override. It would a take 5/8ths majority of the roughly 350 Division I members to pass.

Some conferences already have agreed to start giving out the additional money, and NCAA vice president David Berst acknowledged Wednesday that many of the 1,000 or so student-athletes who have signed national letters-of-intent did so with the expectation of receiving the additional money.

Those athletes will get the stipend, the NCAA announced in a statement on its web site.

But unless the override measure fails or the board passes a modified version, athletes who sign with schools in February or April would be prohibited from receiving additional money.

Emmert has insisted over the past several months that the additional money is not pay-for-play and compares it to stipends non-athletes receive beyond the cost of tuition, room and board, books and fees. Until 1972, college athletes were permitted to receive a small monthly payment as laundry money.

Some critics contend $2,000 is not nearly enough and cite studies showing the average athlete pays roughly $3,000 to $4,000 out of his or her own pocket in college costs.

rocky-IVThe Kindle Fire is a hit and Amazon just released an impressive number to back up the widely accepted sentiment. Amazon is currently selling Kindles at a rate of one million per week as demand increases. Despite the huge sales numbers, Amazon has managed to keep the tablets and ereaders in stock and available for next day shipping. Even Apple couldn't fulfill that sort of demand after the launch of either versions of the iPad.
